The latest collection with Rolita Couture just dropped this month, so to celebrate we talked to the brand's founder, Rosa Yanisselli. Yanisselli founded the brand in 2013 as an Etsy shop after she applied for a job as a nurses assistant but never got an interview. As it turned out, the universe was trying to send a message, and it was not getting the interview that led her to make the jump into a passion project with Rolita Couture. After a few years, Rolita Couture became bigger than she could have imagined.

iHR: Tell us a little bit about yourself - how did you come up with your stage name, Matroda? Who IS Matroda? Walk us through a day in the life - morning routines or daily rituals, the music you listen to outside of EDM or house, what song do you have on repeat right now?!

Matroda: Well, first of all, if I start with WHO is Matroda; He is just a simple guy coming from Croatia whose passion for house music developed in early teenage years and who has been following his dreams 'till now and still going on. Of course it’s been developing 'till now and it won’t stop, I can promise. Stage name Matroda is a combination of my real name MATija RODic

My daily routine is very simple: I wake up, I eat, and I go to the studio where I spend most of the day (if I’m not on tour). Regarding music; I listen to everything, from rock, punk to hip hop. I believe there are so many good tracks coming in lately so it’s hard to pick my fav one.

iHR: 2022 has been a huge year for you! From playing another massive set at EDC Las Vegas & dropping your collaboration with Wax Motif ‘La Candela’ to going B2B with Bleu Clair and playing multiple music festivals throughout the U.S. What would you say have been some of your personal highlights from this year so far?

M: Every show I do is a highlight for me and has a special spot in my career, for sure. I just want to enjoy myself and have a good time. I always do my best [whether I am] playing EDC or some small underground venue. My personal highlight is definitely meeting so many new people all around the world.

iHR: Speaking of B2B’s – who would you say are your favorite artists to go B2B with? And what is your dream B2B set/where?

M: I always enjoy playing B2B with my friends. My favorite artist to go b2b with would definitely be Carl Cox.

iHR: Have you ever had any fanboy moments? Who are some artists you really look up to or admire?

M: Hans Zimmer, Rick Rubin, Pharell Williams to name a few..

iHR: Who or what inspired you to start producing? Are there any early influences or moments that really defined your decision to pursue music? I noticed you are quite the pianist – did you decide at a very early age that music is what you wanted to do and were you always supported in that decision? 

M: It was actually my dad with his rock vinyl collection. That’s how I started to listen to and discover music, but it was my elder brother who introduced me to electronic music. Fun times back in the days :) I don’t see myself as a pianist. i’m far from that but I do like it and have fun playing piano.

iHR: Your sound has definitely evolved from when you first dropped ‘Some Strange Voices’ back in 2013 and songs like Adriatic Step back in 2014. Tell me about how your sound has evolved over the years and how you eventually molded your signature Matrodasound?

M: It’s a process. I always try to create something new and unique. My sound changed, or I should say evolved, and will most probably continue to do that going forward.

iHR: Your passion and hard work speak volumes, and it’s been amazing to see how you pour your passion into your music and also the creation and curation of your very own label: Terminal Underground! Tell us a little more about how it all began, some of your favorite milestones, and your plans for the label in the future. 

M: I just wanted to have a platform where I can present dope music from myself and other up & coming producers with a fresh sound. I don’t have any huge plans, I just want to offer a good platform and expose new music from new talents/producers. It’s hard to pick one festival as there are too many to name. Maybe we will build our own Terminal Underground festival in the future. :)

iHR: Speaking of music festivals and stages, how does it feel to be playing your FIRST Electric Zoo at Tchami’s Confession Stage? This will also be my first EZOO and this is the stage I'm excited about the most! What can we expect from your set? Will you be curating it based on Confession’s sound? What are you looking forward to the most about EZOO or just being in NY in general?

M: It feels great to be part of EZOO for the very first time. Shoutout to Tchami for having me on his stage. You can expect lots of new music. I always try to present matrodasound so you will have a lot of Matroda’s music. I love NYC and the energy. I'm looking forward to discovering some new dope food places.

iHR: Do you ever hang out and enjoy the music festivals you play? Or do you typically go in and out of festivals? If you do, what has been your favorite festival you’ve ever attended and why? 

M: I do try to hang out and enjoy with people, and I really love checking other acts/artists performing but there are times when my schedule is so tight I cannot afford to go to bed late. 

It’s hard to pin out my fav festival as there are so many great ones. I’m really looking forward to the EZOO experience. I don’t get nervous, being completely honest.

iHR: On a smaller scale, what are some of your favorite venues you’ve ever played? Any on your bucket list still? I know a lot of people are DYING to see you play the Brooklyn Mirage! 

M: I'm a big fan of small/dark underground venues. Doing Brooklyn Mirage is def on my to do list. I would love to do a show at Red Rocks in Denver too. 

iHR: I would be remiss if I didn’t ask you about YOUR DRIP. How would you describe your style? Do you design your own merch? And do you think you’ll ever dabble more in the fashion world? 

I do like fashion and enjoy bringing that to my fans. My merchandise is represented by me and my creative designing team who are evolving my style and ideas all the time. With each tour I’m trying to show something new, fresh, something unique people might actually like to wear every day. We are always combining street fashion with elegance and a spark of Matroda.  New merch is coming out this September 👀

homegameauction: Thank you for your time, CAPOZZI! First of all - you are an absolute legend. I’d love to start from the beginning! Tell us about your upbringing in the bay area and how that shaped your career as a musician! Who were your early influences, and when did you decide that music would be it for you?

CAPOZZI: The Bay Area has a huge independent music scene that was big in my upbringing. Both my mother and father have different taste in music and I feel like that also helped shape me. My father was a drummer and my mother had signed me up for piano lessons as a child. So music has always been very important in my houseHold. A lot of my friends growing up also worked in music and either had their own make shift studios at home or were being experimental with music.

iHR: What made you want to shift gears in your career to EDM & house music? Is there a defining moment in your life that gave birth to the concept of CAPOZZI? Who were some of your biggest influences there as far as sound? And was it easy for you to learn to mix/produce?

C: I decided to start Capozzi in 2018. I had always loved House music and since I had been previously exposed to “make-shift” studios it was pretty easy for me to mix/produce. I’ve been exposed to this since 2015, I’ve been around Dj Snake, Tchami, Malaa, and Mercer throughout the years so I’ve just been exposed to all different genres of electronic music and I just have always had a liking for House music.

iHR: Knowing how much you love fashion, I would love to hear about how you curated/landed on your aesthetic for CAPOZZI. How would you describe CAPOZZI fashion and what are some of your favorite festival fashion trends currently?

C: A lot of my fashion is inspired by my love for the whole word of the Matrix. When you come to my shows I want everyone to feel like they are experiencing that.

iHR: Ok back to the music! You first made a splash in the scene with your release SOS on Tchami’s Confession label, and now you’re going to be playing on the Confession Stage at EZOO! That’s a huge win! Tell us more about your connection with Confession - how did you first get connected with the label and how are you preparing for your FIRST EZOO? What are you looking forward to the most?

C: Tchami is family, I’ve been watching him become a legend before my eyes and seeing that inspired me to want to curate my music to a sound that was not similar but in the same world as confessions. I’m totally prepared. I have always to represent the family on every stage i play. So it’s always exciting when we are all playing in the same place!

iHR: What would you say was the most defining moment in your career as CAPOZZI? What can we expect from CAPOZZI In the future?

C: I think my most career-defining moment was playing the Pink Tent at Hard Fest in 2021. It was 4 pm, and it was ram-packed, and everyone going crazy my set was next level for me. So yeah, I’d definitely say that was it. As for the future… I can’t predict that, but I can assure you I will be coming harder each year, and I plan on getting better with time.

iHR: Listening to your music and knowing there aren’t very many female producers in the scene, I can honestly say I feel so inspired by your sound and just your entire essence! What would you say to the gals out there who want to maybe get into music or work in the music industry in general?

C: I would say if you want to do it just do it but do not feel the need to be everywhere and in everyone’s face. Being picky and choosy with what you do and how you decide to spread your energy is VERY IMPORTANT. Not everything or every opportunity is worth your energy and or what your brand is about.

Very well said! It was amazing to get to know someone with the impressive background and trajectory that CAPOZZI brings on AND off the decks! CAPOZZI is true pioneer in her own realm as a female DJ/producer with a unique look and sound, I'm excited to not only experience a proper Confession set from her at Electric Zoo but to see her evolve and become the fullest expression of who she is!

homegameauction: Tell us about your music...

Lizzy Jane: My roots in electronic music have always been dubstep and free-form bass music. Over the last two years, I have fully incorporated my vocals into all of my singles and collaborations. I am so grateful to have the support from major bass labels such as Disciple Round Tables, Kannibalen, Subsidia and more. The future of Lizzy Jane comes with my debut EP  What Is Silence  that will be released this fall.

I will always keep bass music in my roots, but I am expanding my sound and growing my project, as every artist should. Keeping the heavy undertones paired with my own vocals, I am starting to build a fully live show. Incorporating looping features, organic instruments, and of course continuing to DJ and sing. I feel like everything I've done my whole life musically (before the Lizzy Jane project was created) has led to this moment where I have incorporated my full musical background into the future of the project that I am most passionate about.

I cannot wait for the fans and for North Coast to hear what I've been up to. The energy will remain the same, but you're about to see many more sides to Lizzy Jane! :)

iHR: Tell us about your new release, Take Control?

LJ: “Take Control” was a wonderful track to work on with Figure, who is an absolute legend of an artist. Figure and I met when we played a show in Florida together and he heard me sing. Shortly after, we discussed starting a collaboration, we did a podcast at Forbidden Kingdom Music Festival 2021, and the rest was history. This song came together so naturally.

As I definitely have a unique voice, we pulled from all different styles of music for inspiration on this one, and it all blended together so well. The cinematic elements and crazy sound design paired with my vocals fully brought this haunting song to life.

I can't wait to play this one during my set at NCMF this year! “Take Control” is about taking control of your life and proving everyone wrong. To everyone who hasn't heard the song yet, listen to “Take Control” HERE.

iHR: Can you tell us about the production process of that?

LJ: Figure initially sent me an insane first outline of what he was thinking for the instrumental of the song, and it sounded like it was written for me. I wrote the lyrics and started to engineer them shortly after. We worked on a few sessions sending the project back and forth, tweaking small mixing details and adding some more cinematic elements.

I debuted the song at Lost Lands 2021, and we knew it would be a bit before the track was released (literally about a year) so we were so happy when we got a date to lock in a release before this summer!

iHR: What can fans expect from your upcoming North Coast set?

LJ: Fans can expect tons of new music, especially hearing all the singles from my upcoming EP  What is Silence,  plus other gems from the last year of writing, more singing than ever before, and LOTS of energy ... but most of all, it's making sure that when I have the stage everyone is having the best time, staying safe and watching out for one another.

iHR: What are some of your favorite rave and festival styles?

LJ: I initially was drawn to raves and festivals because you can wear and be whoever you want to be, unapologetically. I always loved that. As someone who didn't feel like they fit in throughout my grade school years, this became my safe space to meet others and connect in ways where I didn't feel judged.

I personally love pairing fun, thrifty, loud jackets (jean and leather) with some type of crop paired with baggy jeans or sleek biker shorts. I definitely can't wait to try out some more new styles this coming festival season and fall touring season!

iHR: What does festival fashion mean to you?

LJ: Festival fashion means you can leave societal norms at the front gates and wear what you want to wear without judgement! As someone who struggles every day to be comfortable in my own skin, seeing so many beautiful ladies completely owning their outfits at festivals makes me feel so amped and inspired to take the stage and own it.

iHR: What does rave and dance music culture mean to you?

LJ: It's pretty crazy to see the growth of electronic dance music in this culture, even in the last 5 to 10 years. It's absolutely wild. It makes me happy and excited for the future of this scene growing to new heights.

In a world that is coming apart one day and decision at a time, dance music stays a safe place for all. As long as us artists, attendees, industry personnel and music lovers preserve this space, we will continue to see this culture grow and flourish.

iHR: If you made one piece of kandi today, what would it say?

LJ: I would definitely make a kandi bracelet today that says 'love more.' We need love more than ever right now in every corner of our world, and I have complete confidence this love is still preserved at music festivals and concerts.

We must fight to keep spreading that love in our workplace, with our friends and family, and in day to day interactions with complete strangers. I fully believe you can make a difference as one person because you can inspire another individual to make a change or decision for the better.

homegameauction: Tell us a bit about "The Garden"

Starya: I have always been obsessed with fantasy ideas and imagery—rainbows, secret gardens and treasure. I really wanted to lead the listener into this world of magic—isn't that what music is all about? I was also on a mission to create something very high energy with an emphasis on some fun bass synth sound design inspired by some of my favorite EDM artists.

iHR: What are some of your inspirations when making new music?

S: Probably the thing that inspires me the most when I hit a creative block are live shows, seeing an incredible artist create that energy is so inspiring. Day-to-day inspirations can be anything from the way the sunlight comes through the trees, to a weird sound my dog makes.

iHR: Can you tell us a bit about your upcoming projects? Are there any releases in the pipeline?

S: My second release is called "Manipulator" and will be out on Popgang Records on Friday, July 1! I am also very excited to play at one of my FAVORITE venues in the world, Elsewhere in New York on Saturday, August 6.

iHR: When it comes to your rave or festival style, how do you approach creating a look?

S: I love to either go with something that matches perfectly, for instance everything that is yellow in my closet. Or, I like to grab the most random pieces and put them together to the point where I look absolutely ridiculous—and then go with it.

iHR: What rave fashion trends are you most excited to see this festival season?

S: I am super into all the jumpsuits and fun crazy sunglasses. Jumpsuits are the best, I have about 10 different ones.

iHR: If u made a piece of kandi today, what would it say?

S: "wow"

iHR: Favorite festival memory?

I have had so many fantastic and inspiring festival experiences, but I would have to say probably Coachella 2019 because I got to attend as an artist playing the campground stage. I had been many times before and always wanted to be there in the context of sharing my music. It was such a validating and special experience finally getting to do that and then attending the rest of the festival with my artist pass, which is an insanely incredible experience on its own because you get access to the best viewing area right in the front of every stage.

homegameauction: Tell us a bit about your live sets and what the audience can expect at GRIDLIFE Midwest?

KAR POW: At the moment, I’m really into hard techno (so that). But I never want to put myself, my music, or mixing into a box. I’d describe my sound as raw, emotive and intense. Expect to go hard. Expect to have fun. Expect to dance your face off. But I also hope you feel it in your heart and soul — that's the cherry on top!

iHR: What got you into DJing?

KP: At shows and festivals, I’d always find myself trying to figure out exactly what the DJ was doing on stage. What started as a fascination turned into a fierce love for the art of DJing, but it took me years to finally say fuck it and go for it. Having a creative outlet and playing house parties for friends were my original intentions and things kind of escalated from there. DJing is now an obsession.

iHR: Can you tell us a bit about your upcoming projects? Are there any releases in the pipeline?

KP: Yes! Original music and fashion line coming in 2023. Can't wait to release all these ideas that have been living in my head.

iHR: When it comes to your rave or festival style, how do you approach creating a look?

KP: Comfort over everything, especially if I’m performing at the festival. If I feel comfortable, then I’m more likely to feel sexy and confident and kill it on stage. If that means a see-through bodysuit, cool. If that means a baggy t-shirt, also cool. Most of my closet consists of black or camo prints, but I borrowed this homegameauction-worthy dress from my Wifey just for the occasion!

iHR: What rave fashion trends are you most excited to see this festival season?

KP: Not really a trend, but I love seeing individuality shine through fashion, especially at music festivals. Those who choose to be themselves unapologetically and wear whatever the hell they want — that’s what's up!

iHR: If you made a piece of kandi today what would it say?

KP: Fuck with me or don’t!

iHR: Favorite festival memory?

KP: Seeing Alison Wonderland play at Electric Forest in 2015 is hands down my favorite festival memory. She left everything on that stage and, in my opinion, that kind of performance sets the bar. It was so lovely, leaving that set feeling so inspired and empowered — and that’s what I strive to do for others as well!

We spoke with Katie Kansas, the Entertainment Director for the Ultra Angels who is also on the team herself, as well as Christine Cabreja, another Ultra Angel you'll see onstage at this year's festival.

homegameauction:  Can u tell us a bit more about Ultra from ur perspective as a dancer?

Katie Kansas:  What an experience! The week of Ultra is so busy and crazy for us. From arrivals to meetings, fittings, rehearsals, creating content and of course the madness of the show days. Being a part of the backstage hustle and bustle is just insane. Plus of course being on that stage in front of all the amazing people feeding off of the energy… This is an incredible moment in time for any performer.

Christine Cabreja:  Ultra is it's own universe. This vast amount of beautiful energy. From the stage you can see core memories happening in real time, moments that I know will last forever.

iHR:  What are some of ur favorite pieces the Ultra Angels have worn over the years?

KK:  We work with a lot of amazing designers so it is hard to choose but my personal favorite look I created for the girls is always my Clear Bionic Babe that is made from clear worbla, metal details and layered onto of a nude mesh/silver bodysuit.

CC:  It’s so hard to choose! I would say the flag pieces because they’re an Ultra Angels staple. And I absolutely love the purple and red pieces… it’s giving sexy, futuristic superwoman vibes.

IHR:  What are ur favorite rave fashion styles and trends these days?

KK:  I am loving the matching sets and new fun leg accessories everyone is wearing. 

CC:  Right now I have been loving harnesses/garters. They dresses up any basic and it looks bad ass.

iHR:  Are there any newer rave fashion trends ur excited to see more of this festival season?

KK:  I hope to see a bit more of the layered look. Although I know that simple has been trending I love it when people add depth to a look.

CC:  I’m excited to see all the long colorful braids and hairstyles this festival season.

iHR:  Do u have any styling tips and secrets for wearing festival fashion?

KK:  Make sure your base look fits [right] and isn’t too tight in the sensitive areas, then start layering fun accessories like harnesses, belts, shrugs, etc. Uncomfortable footwear is just part of the deal but I like to go with combat boots, chunky booties or a wedge sneaker to ensure that I can make it all day/night.

CC:  1- Buy insoles and be proactive about blisters. Boots and sneakers are king. You’ll thank me later. 2 - Layer. You can always take off layers but you can’t put on if you don’t have them. 3 - Get creative and accessorize! You’re here in this life to play and have fun.

KK:  Megastructure is always great to dance on… but of course MainStage gives you all the feels. The pyro is like nothing else.

CC:  Resistance.

iHR:  What is ur favorite thing to do in Miami?

KK:  Bike ride down the boardwalk, eat at a great local spot and watch the sunset.

homegameauction: What is your favorite thing about rave culture?

Perry Richardson: My favorite thing about the rave culture is the feeling of community. The uniqueness of an individual is celebrated. Acceptance of everyone is the theme. Individuals are encouraged and allowed to express themselves in a “No Judgment” atmosphere. Different backgrounds, different cultures, different people come together with no hate in their hearts. That’s what I love about the rave culture. Setting aside differences to uplift each other all in the love for dance music. The beauty of community gives me hope for the future.

iHR: How does Black culture and history tie into the rave scene and what does it mean for your personal experience?

PR: Black culture set the tone for dance music. My great-grandmother told me about the fun and lively dance music of her generation. That she danced in the streets to jazz music in the 40s and 50s. The 60s funk music evolved from African-inspired music emphasizing the bassline and drum. In the 70s electronic notes became more prevalent in songs and media due to the popularity of disco. Black culture used various forms of dance music to celebrate the culture and praise the accomplishments of the African American community.

iHR: How did you get the idea for starting your podcast?

PR: I had the opportunity to be interviewed as a guest on two podcasts within a month. This was a new experience for me. I fell in love with the storytelling aspect of podcasting. After this experience, I realized I wanted to share my story to inspire others. I've been described as very ambitious but also described as a party animal. Productivity Meets Party teaches others that they can have fun while getting all their stuff done. Funny Story: In 2018, my ex-boyfriend broke up with me because I didn't listen to podcasts. Now I have a 5-star podcast on Apple and Spotify. 

iHR: A lot of people struggle with thinking that life has to be one or the other when it comes to partying/going to festivals and being successful in a career. Do you have any advice for how to balance those passions?

PR: My advice would be to make sure your priorities are in place. Also, you know where your time is going. We spend so much time on social media, overthinking, and overindulging. You have to know what's important to you and WHY it's important to you. I also believe there are no such things as sacrifices. You don't have to pick one or the other. If you want both, you can have both. There is no limit to the magic someone can create in their life.

iHR: How did you know you wanted to start coaching?

PR: I initially thought I would pursue a legal career, but I was showing up more online instead of reading textbooks. I started getting a lot of questions in my direct messages. Questions about engagement hacks, photo editing tips, and how I was working with brands. My branding allowed me to receive brand collabs, attend festivals and shows for free. I've been asked to represent the rave community through modeling and podcast guest opportunities. I've always been a huge believer that "there is always room at my table." I wanted to share my knowledge with other content creators and business owners. There are so many benefits of growing a brand on social media. I found out that many people do not participate in life because they lack confidence. I believe that having a plan and believing in that plan generates confidence. I empower my students and teach them how to develop a plan to achieve their goals and reach their highest potential.

iHR: What is your fav thing about homegameauction?

PR: I'm eternally grateful for the iHR team. My first collaboration with iHR was in 2018 when I had less than 2,000 followers on Instagram. They are consistently supporting content creators. No matter what they look like! No matter their follower count. The clothes are super cute and comfortable! There is something for everybody's type and size. They showcase every body type and size on their website, advertising, and all social platforms. 

iHR: What rave and festival fashion styles are you loving for this upcoming festival season?

PR: I love mini skirts! My new favorite thing is pairing them with thigh-high socks. I absolutely love the schoolgirl vibe. I also love the style of layering necklaces. 

iHR: What is your favorite festival and why?

PR: This is always a hard question for me! I have to pick two I'm SORRY LOL My first favorite is Spring Awakening Music Festival in Chicago. Chicago is absolutely breathtaking. Besides the scenery, I met my two best friends there (Shoutout to Kyiah and Katie). SAMF has a very special place in my heart!! My 2nd favorite is EDC Las Vegas hands down! EDC LV has literally everything you could want in a festival. The lineup is always amazing, the firework show is incredible, vibes are off the charts, and the production is 10 out of 10. It doesn't hurt that it's located in my hometown :) 

iHR: What are your top 3 EDM genres?

PR: I'm a bass babe but I do have a love for house music. I hula hoop and orbit. In my opinion, it's easy to flow to lighter beats than aggressive bass music. LOL My top 3 EDM genres are dubstep, riddim, and deep house. 

iHR: What are your top 3 EDM artists?

PR: My top 3 EDM artists are Nitti Gritti, Subtronics, and Svdden Death. 

iHR: If you made a piece of Kandi today, what would it say?

PR: My piece of Kandi would say Productivity Meets Party. It's a lot of words but it describes who I am. That is why I named the podcast that. Productivity Meets Party means to me that you can have fun. You can live a life full of excitement while still being successful. 

Stream Queen (often stylized as SQXO) got her start in EDM as a fan, riding the rails at festivals like Ultra, EDC and Tomorrowland in the 2010's. When she realized she was almost always on the live stream of the festivals she was attending, she got started in social media and launched a career out of her love for EDM. What started as a passion quickly turned into a career, and today SQXO is on her way to becoming one of the hottest female DJs in the festival scene. She's also a style icon in the rave scene in addition to being a successful DJ.

We caught up with Stream Queen as she boarded the ship at Groove Cruise, where she's set to play some of her first festival sets of what is sure to be a huge year.

homegameauction: How is your DJ career going?

SQXO: It’s been absolutely amazing! I definitely was not expecting things to take off as quickly as they have but I couldn’t be happier. When I first started out on this journey, I didn’t really have any expectations. It’s been so cool to hear people’s positive feedback on SoundCloud and seeing that my music is listened to all over the world.

I’ve already played a few international shows and tons of out of state shows and I just never thought those things would happen so quickly back when I got serious about music last year. I am so grateful and blessed for the people in my life that have made this happen and for everyone that believes in and supports me.

iHR: What are some upcoming gigs you're most excited about?

SQXO: I’m actually on my way to Groove Cruise as I type this and I’ve been looking forward to my sets on there for months now! 

iHR: What do you have planned for 2022?

SQXO: Releasing new music, more tour dates and of course—finally going home to Ultra Miami.

iHR: How does it feel having gone from being a raver up against the rail at shows and festivals to being onstage?

SQXO: It’s the craziest feeling. Part of why I love putting sets together is due to being a raver for so many years—I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what the crowd likes to hear because I’ve spent so much time in the crowd. I just love sharing the music that I love and helping create fun and memorable experiences for people. EDM has been my passion for so long and it’s been amazing to explore that in a different way as an artist. 

iHR: Any advice for rave babes that want to get into the industry?

SQXO: It’s a LOT of hard work, but it pays off! I don’t post much about the day to day things that I do but I’m almost always working on music- I usually spend 12+ hours every day between practicing new transitions, working on sets, and producing. Take it one step at a time, things are really overwhelming at first but the more you practice, the more you learn and better you get. So don’t get discouraged!

iHR: What are some of your favorite festival styles?

SQXO: I will forever be obsessed with sequins, rhinestones and anything holographic

iHR: What festival styles do you see becoming big in 2022?

SQXO: I think cute bodysuits are going to stay in trend for sure. Fluffy ears and earrings as well. I personally have been waiting for the return of the old school flower bra and tutu outfit though!

SQXO: Accessories are a super easy way to elevate an outfit!

iHR: What are your ultimate rave and festival tips?

SQXO: Bring a hydration pack and drink water! Keep an open mind going into every event. Every event is different and has pros and cons- try not to compare one festival experience to another because they are all amazing in their own way. Oh and of course—WEAR EARPLUGS! Earplugs is honestly just as important as drinking water. Once your hearing is damaged, there’s no fixing it. 

iHR: What are your top 5 favorite festivals around the world?

SQXO: Ultra Miami, Tomorrowland, EDC, Das Energi, Gold Rush

homegameauction: What inspired you to found Lyte Couture?

Kristen Boles: I have always loved live music of every kind. I found electronic music and its culture to be my niche. I have been going to events for 2 decades and have always felt inspiration and joy in the culture and music. My husband and I ran a production company hosting EDM events for many years. Absorbing and enjoying the experience from one side, I felt as though I could make an artistic impact in the fashion industry. It all began on my kitchen table, [as a] mother of 3 (9/12/17 yrs old), wife and now business owner.

iHR: Can you describe what Lyte Couture is to you?

KB: The Lyte Couture to me is a platform that celebrates individuality and strives to make all friends comfortable, excited and fashionable. This company has given me the opportunity to bring joy to a culture I have enjoyed for so long. A culture that allows me to express my artistic visions and see my fellow ravers vibing out in my creations gives me goosebumps. Making any BODY feel beautiful and comfortable is a wonderful rush.

Fast forward several years and Space Yacht has carved a name for itself within the music world. From discovering some of the best up & coming artists through their Tune Reactor on Twitch to creating an eclectic clothing brand and taking over entire stages at festivals like Beyond Wonderland, there’s no doubt that the Space Yacht crew is on the verge of something massive—one pizza slice at a time.

We caught up with Space Yacht Co-Founder Rami Perlman to find out where the Space Yacht ship is headed after catching wind of their debut DnB Compilation: Critical Mass Vol. 1

homegameauction: Space Yacht has been taking the scene by storm in the last few years, what would you say sets space yacht apart from other shows and dance music events?

Rami Perlman: When we started Space Yacht six years ago, it was just a hang for our friends, DJs and industry folks. We didn't set out with any grand vision. After the first year, we started to see Space Yacht as a real thing where people were asking us if they could play our shows.

We made it our mission to bring the best up-and-coming talent, who you may or may not have ever heard of, to the forefront. We always joke that we discover new artists 18 months before they ever hit one of the festival main stages. We think of our events as a source of new music discovery. We also have an incredible community of music fans, producers and club goers who are some of the most open-minded, kind people out there.

iHR: The pandemic definitely threw everyone for a loop last year but Space Yacht continued to rise & thrive. What are some of the ways you leveraged and balanced everything going on in 2020 and what are some of the milestones you’re proudest about?

RP: Like many, Covid completely shut down our existing events business. We were able to survive by starting new businesses that could exist online. In 2020 we launched a record label, clothing line, NFT business and Twitch demo listening show show called Tune Reactor.

By living online and connecting directly with our community, these new businesses enabled us to not only stay relevant, but grow our fanbase. What we didn't see coming was that Tune Reactor would became a place for us to discover new talent for the label and our events; 80%-90% of what we've been signing to the label has come from that show, and in many cases we've booked lineups for events based on who is impressing us on Twitch. Wild!

iHR: There’s no shortage of talent & creativity with the Space Yacht crew and that clearly showed through your NFT drops last year! From your in-house designers to your collaboration with Goldweard, could you tell me more about everything that went into creating “the fastest selling NFTs that Nifty Getaway had ever seen”?

RP: NFTs have been a new form of expression for the brand. We had already been working with animators and creatives for our tour visuals, so we already had a gang of great visual creators. I also loved the idea of creating music specifically for NFTs that don't exist on streaming platforms.

We ended up bringing on Sahir Khan to lead the animation team. Sahir was a Space Yacht regular who I often smoked joints with on the back patio at our Tuesday night events. He also just so happens to be an insanely talented creative director and animator. In the past year, we have created 4 collections together, all featuring original animations by Sahir and music from me. I'm also a physical art and NFT collector, so for me this has been a true labor of love.

iHR: Speaking of collabs & cool drops, talk to me more about the Space Yacht aesthetic and how it inspires your clothing line as far as who you collaborate with & what kinds of designs we see? I loved the drops with Crimson Child and Bubz and am excited to see you guys continue to highlight some of the amazing art within the EDM community!

RP: The images and slogans that are put on our clothing represent the attitude of our community, and they're a reflection of me and Henry's twisted sense of humor. Designs like "WE ARE SO FCKED" and "Welcome To Hell" are good examples of that.  It's all tongue-in-cheek in some way, but it's who we are.  Just as we collaborate with talent in the music space, apparel allows us to further collaborate with visual artists who are in our scene.

Most recently we’ve collaborated with Pretty Done, who is an artist based out of Las Vegas. He’s been creating all the artwork for our record label releases and we have a collaborative apparel collection coming this fall.  We love visual art, it's always been a part of what we do.

iHR: Now that we’re on the topic of fashion I have to ask, what are some of your favorite rave and festival fashion styles you’ve seen this year and how do you see yourself continuing to incorporate yourself into the festival fashion circuit?

RP: We just did our second pop up shop with Rave Wonderland, who are one of our favorite clothing brands in the festival space. When you go to the bigger raves, you see Rave Wonderland outfits and clack fans all over the place. It's amazing to see them killing it, and they have been huge supporters of Space Yacht.

I think the three biggest fashion trends we've been seeing at the festivals are definitely artist jerseys, clack fans and sling bags. And it makes sense. A jersey is the most comfortable shirt you can wear. It's breathable, and both guys and girls can rock it. It's hot as hell on the West Coast, so the clack fans will keep you cool. People also love clacking them at the drop. Clack fans are by far Space Yacht's best selling item at festivals.

Finally, the sling bag is the perfect accessory where you can keep all essentials without having to carry around a backpack. It also looks cool. You can keep your weed in it. Also, bucket hats have been the rage!

iHR: Now I know you’re not just at festivals and shows checking out the fashion - could you tell me more about the way you curate the artists you choose for your Space Yacht Takeovers? What would be the best way for an up and coming artist to catch your attention?

RP: Like any other music fan, we discover music from our own research and various sources. Henry and I are music fans, first and foremost!  But we have indeed found a lot of new artists from Tune Reactor, as well as from managers and agents who hit us up about new projects that they are working on.

The curation always revolves around genre or theme for each event. If we’re going to do a Tech My House night, we'll focus on DJs and producers in that lane. We'll usually have an anchor person to headline the night, and then build the lineup around that person. More and more, we are integrating talent from our record label to play our shows.

A lot of times, the bookings are centered around who is in our universe at the moment. Sometimes, I'll be racking my brain about who to put on a show, and then someone will tweet at me, or a manager will hit me up on email, and all of a sudden I'm booking that artist. Curation is about 50% of what we do on a day to day basis, and we are constantly pushing ourselves to deliver fresh artists and lineups. It's easy to get stale if you don't keep pushing new ideas.

iHR: DNB is definitely the talk of the town these days & Space Yacht continues to be at the forefront with your inaugural Drum and Bass Compilation which is curated by REAPER this year. Tell us more about what we can expect from Critical Mass Vol 1. & if we can expect to see more of these artists at your takeovers?

RP: Drum and bass is actually the first type of electronic music that I fell in love with, so this compilation is definitely near and dear to my heart. Critical Mass Vol. 1 showcases a collection of artists who are on the rise and pushing the genre forward, specifically in the US.

We tapped REAPER to help curate the comp as we've been huge fans of his, and definitely see him as leading the D&B scene in the states. He brought a lot to this project, both in finding records and working out the tracks that flowed together on the comp. We intend to do more of these kinds of curatorial collaborations in the future. We have an upcoming Techno compilation that we are working on with HELBOUND!, and a few other projects in the works with producers from our scene.

iHR: You don't have to tune into Tune Reactor for long to discover some incredible new artists and sounds that haven't yet graced our ears at the clubs or mainstage. Can you name a couple (or a few) of up & coming artists you’re most excited about from Critical Mass, Tech My House or just in general? PUT US ON!

RP: Top to bottom, we think all of the artists on the Critical Mass compilation are worth diving into. If you are new to D&B or interested in where the genre is headed, this group is really leading the way. For real, I can't choose just one. On the House side of things we are extremely excited about the upcoming Tech My House Vol 3. roster which includes Xeno, Dem2, Gibson Parker, Local Singles and a slew of other house gunslingers. Also, the Crimson Child album we dropped a few months back is a masterpiece. Definitely worth diving into.

iHR: Did you always see Space Yacht going in this direction? What do you see for the future of Space Yacht?

RP: We started this party on a whim, just for fun. In no way did we see it turning into a relevant brand within the dance music space, let alone become our full-time jobs. We feel grateful every day that we get to do what we love, and help be a platform for new talent to reach their goals.

As we look towards the future, we are focused on brand and company growth, which in some cases means that we are just going to keep doing what we are doing - sign records, throw shows, make cool shit. We always have a few experimental projects in the works that may or may not lead to anything, like when we started our NFT initiative, which turned into a new, successful business for us. But our core passion will always be in music, dance music culture and helping new artists live out their dreams.

iHR: How can I get my hands on a Space Yacht Disco Ball tho?

RP: That thing weighs 300 pounds. Good luck carrying it out of the club haha!

From directing music videos for artists like Zedd and RL Grime to choreographing shows and performances at major venues across the country to her own work as a queer DJ and producer, PENNYWILD has shown time and time again that the lines between mediums can and should be crossed. Her latest single, "Sidestreets" is a housey homage to LA's underground dance music scene—or at least the ride there.

Now, in preparation of the release of her brand new EP, NIGHT PEOPLE, which will be out later this year via Popgang Records, I caught up with Penny to discuss everything from her live shows to our favorite topic here at homegameauction: rave fashion. homegameauction: Tell us a bit about Night People and the inspiration behind it.

PENNYWILD: The NIGHT PEOPLE project was born out of a desire for to authentically depict some of my “glory years,” (I know, I know, “I’m still young” blah blah) and demonstrate what exactly went down on our crazy nights out. After my debut EP MIDI In Motion, I was sort of slamming my head against the wall - we were in peak COVID-19 times, and I found myself craving a true night life record to consume so I could feel like I was dancing at a nightclub again. I wasn’t finding much in my sphere, so I thought to myself “I guess I should just... make one myself!” After some brief sonic experimentation, I knew it was the direction I wanted to go in. Everything started writing itself, and now here we are! 

homegameauction: How was the response to the release of Sidestreets?

PENNYWILD: I’ve been really overwhelmed by the positive response to the 1st single! I was a bit nervous, seeing as this type of “skit” music (or “Skit House” as I’ve joked) isn’t exactly your run of the mill dance record. Because there’s lots of vocal sampling, chatter, narrative arc, etc, I was nervous that the dance music community would reject this take, claiming it was too theatrical or something. People have been so generous with their feedback—it’s making me feel like dance music is ready for even more boundary-pushing. I’ve always been passionate about storytelling over everything, so it’s been really exciting and gratifying to watch unfold. 

"I always gravitate towards an item with a cut-out - I think it really elevates a look and makes people take a double-take. I’d layer this with a fishnet boy short to get some more texture, and finish it off with a cute plain bralette!"

homegameauction: As a dancer, do you have a unique approach to live shows that might be different from other DJs and producers?

PENNYWILD: I think getting my start as a Dancer/Choreographer has colored every aspect of what it means to be a musician—it’s really influenced my approach to not only live shows, but also production itself. My access point to music is movement, so I definitely always jump in feet first. I strive to really make the crowd let go, release, and dance—not just stand there recording with their phones. It typically takes a few moments to warm up the crowd, but I do feel like I’ve been getting more and more successful at giving the audience real escapism.

"Over the years, I’ve evolved from a black backpack gal, to a cross-body fanny pack gal. Nothing better than traveling with solely the essentials and being completely hands-free. With all the dancing I will undoubtedly do at the function, who’s got time to hold a hand bag?"

 

homegameauction: You've choreographed some pretty exciting projects and directed a few music videos for major artists. Can you tell us about those experiences?

PENNYWILD: Direction has been this really beautiful/fruitful artistic path that accidentally fell into my life in a real “fairytale” type way. Growing up, I didn’t necessarily dream of directing. Choreographing, sure, but not necessarily zooming out for the full picture.

After years of Choreography, I started to direct my projects without even really noticing that I was doing so. I eventually built enough experience that I was approached by an EP that I deeply admire, and now I’m directing at his production company. Almost everything I’ve gotten to work on I’ve blatantly and specifically chased for years, so having this field find me has been a really rewarding experience.

homegameauction: Which do you prefer, choreographing or directing?

PENNYWILD: At this point, I think I can say I prefer directing - which is insane to admit given the 10+ years my Choreographic brain has on my Directorial brain. When I’m directing, I’m usually also choreographing, so perhaps it’s more that I prefer to be in a position where I can have a certain amount of creative control. 

"I’m here for alllll things iridescent - it makes me feel like Lady Gaga. I would rock this underboob moment with boy shorts and a combat boot, keeping it sexy but still a bit more gender neutral, as I tend to lean fashion-wise!"

homegameauction: As a dancer, what are some style tips you have for events?

PENNYWILD: Comfort first, always. I’ve learned time and time again that the pasties, while sexy, aren’t realistically sustainable—and that the suspenders, while adorable, are not going to make it to the last number! I would say finding a balance between flattering, comfortable, and dynamic is the way to go. I’ll never sacrifice quality for comfort, I just make sure I find the pieces that are going to help me perform my best, while also looking chic as fuck at all times.

"Wigs are an integral part of my lifestyle, but it’s hard to find the right one. This color combo is really doing things for me - I’d have so much fun throwing this on with some glitter, a little black dress, and stepping outttt honey."

homegameauction: What do you do with Roma?

Sahand Fard: My father and his partner being the founder of Roma, I basically grew up with the Roma [brand]. Currently I manage all of the production that happens overseas, I oversee our design team, and I manage our sales team. I get to do a bit of everything I love! 

iHR: Can you describe what Roma is to you?

SF: To me personally, it's my baby. Roma is a family business and we all work together so closely. Roma is a company that brings all of us together, including our employees that have been with us for 20 years! Many of our retail accounts have become like family to us. It puts a smile on our face to see all of us grow together.

iHR: What are some of your favorite pieces that Roma has done with homegameauction?

SF: IHeartRaves is a fun company. That's what comes to your head when you think of them. The designs, the fabrics, the colors, and the accessories - all come together for a consumer who is ready to have fun! So to answer your question, they're all my favorite! iHR: What are some of your favorite festival fashion trends?

SF: It's the underboob pop. Such a tease!

iHR: What trends do you see popping up in the next year?

SF: I usually see a trend in full bloom when people were testing it the year before. I believe next year the hit will be using chains on the garment. They were often used in the 90's and it's coming back with modern day garments. 

While many people took to binge-watching Netlix during quarantine, Kandace Florence was busy starting her own small business. She is now the successful owner of Glo Through It, a company that creates candles with inspirational messages that smell incredible. We sat down with Kandace to ask her some questions about Glo Through It's background and to learn more about her company! Check out the Q&A below.

What gave you the inspiration behind Glo Through It and when did you get started?

They always say artists are most creative when heartbroken and this was exactly what happened for me. Like many during Covid-19 quarantine, I started a new hobby. I started making batches of candles to keep myself busy in my small studio apartment. Isolation made me wonder if anyone else was battling a hard time alone. I would always write down quotes or words of affirmation to keep my spirit up. When I received so much great feedback from my candles I decided to pair my positive words with different scents. The whole line came together organically for me and I launched right away in June 2020. I wanted to spread love and positivity during this rough time to anyone who might need it.

Glo Through It is such a cute name! Is there any story behind it? 

I wanted to change the narrative around “going through it” like its a bad thing. We all go through shit in life so I took back my power.  This may be a rough patch in my life, but I’m going to love on myself, shine my light and Glo Through It. 

What’s been the most rewarding and most challenging part of owning your own business?

The most rewarding part has been the genuine love and support from strangers! I am so happy that so many people can resonate with the overall message of self growth and wanting to feel and be better. The most challenging part has been how fast I’ve grown! I wasn’t expecting to sell out my first launch so I found myself struggling to keep up with orders for a few weeks, but it’s an awesome challenge to have first starting out! 

What advice would you give yourself 5 years ago?

5 years ago I was 21, and if I could I would have a full on conference with myself to get my shit together. I would tell myself to stop being scared, save your money & ditch the boy. I would also tell myself that my creativity would open doors for me, so nurture it and explore every path life gives you with confidence and grace. 

Do you have any tips for other small business owners?

My only advice would be to really understand why you want to go into business. When you know you purpose everything else feels like a bonus! 

What’s your favorite Glo Through It product and why?

My favorite product is definitely the Self Care Essentials 4oz candle tin! It was the first product that I created and I am in love with the scent! It has notes of jasmine, lime and lemongrass with beautiful chrysanthemums and lemongrass on top. This candle reflects what the whole brand is about. The tope label says “Self Care: Doing the things that make you feel more like yourself”. The flower tins are so pretty I sometimes feel bad burning them.

Great Falls by Above & Beyond from Flow State
Flow State is probably one of my favorite albums as of late, and what the A&B guys have created is simply soul touching. I actually included two tracks from it in this playlist, as they both give you a mental rest that is so necessary in this chaotic world. That’s how I am choosing to see this time of quarantine for us as well, it’s a forced rest, a reset that we can reflect and re-position, and remember what’s truly important.

Solar Plexus by Sunny Lax
I have been a huge fan of Sunny Lax’s productions for a while now. To me, he is one of the most underrated producers out there. His chords and textures are so luxurious, so well thought out. I have synesthesia, a condition where sound activates my other senses and his productions, in particular, bring out these unique worlds and shapes in my mind. Watch out for this guy, he’s going places!

Long Way Home by Tritonal, HALIENE, Jorza and Schala
This is my recent release with Tritonal and the guys, and I find it particularly fitting for this time. We’ve all got a long way to go to get through this health and economic crisis, but as long we know we are united together in our hearts, we’ll be ok. This song is about remembering that even though the journey may be hard, all that matters is the love we have for each other. Everything else fades away when you keep that in mind. We also just found out that this song is top ten on Sirius XM BPM and also the Billboard Dance Airplay charts!

This song needs no introduction. It is my favorite instrumental track of the past year hands down. The way Andrew has evolved it, completely transforming the track and never returning to the same theme and yet keeping the feeling familiar is complete genius. Raise your hands up to the ceiling in your bedroom on this one and breathe, close your eyes and it will take you places in the stars you’ve never dreamed of.

Cosmic Order by Avao
I fell in love with this track while on the Balance tour with Armin van Buuren, because this song was the cue that my song was coming up next! I would be putting on my in-ears and getting amped to head out on stage during this song every night. Avao is also an amazing producer releasing on my incredible friend MarLo’s label Reaching Altitude and he’s definitely one to watch out for!

Song I Sing by Armin van Buuren ft. HALIENE (Ben Gold Remix)
Ben Gold is absolutely incredible. I love what he did with this remix of my song with Armin, Song I Sing. Ben really took it to another level, while maintaining the authenticity of the song. It’s the trance remix this song deserved!

Tidal Wave by Andrew Bayer from In My Next Life
Tidal Wave is one of my top two vocal trance tracks from last year. Listen to these lyrics! They absolutely floor me, especially right now. “I will find a new way to make a move, in spite of the tidal, I will find a new way to get to you, inside of the tidal wave” and “with my mouth wide open, my lungs are taking water in, though I dream of oceans, I never wanted it all of it”. My heart is stolen by those lyrics. They say so much!

What’s Done Is Done by Seven Lions & HALIENE from Find Another Way EP
I’m ending this playlist with some melodic dubstep and my brand new release with Seven Lions on his latest EP, currently #1 on iTunes and Apple Music Dance. What is EDM?

It’s impossible to talk about riddim without first understanding EDM and its origins. EDM is an acronym that stands for electronic dance music, and it’s sometimes also referred to as electronic music or dance music.  EDM is commonly played at clubs, raves, and music festivals because it’s produced with dancing in mind, but you can also hear it on music streaming sites like Soundcloud and Live Nation radio. In the broadest terms, EDM features a repetitive percussion track, usually with a melody played by a synthesizer laid over the percussion. EDM has many different subgenres and remixes, each with distinctive characteristics of their own, so don’t expect all EDM to sound the same. 

Where Did EDM Originate?

EDM first started appearing in the music industry in the 1970s, but the music on your playlist today bears almost no resemblance to those early songs. The genre has evolved considerably over the past four decades, when it originated from the disco music of the late 70s. Disco used many of the same synthesized percussion sounds and electronic instruments that are used today to get people out on the dance floor.  Some of the early pioneers of the genre include Pete Bellotte and Giorgio Moroder, who wrote the synthesized disco song “I Feel Love,” by Donna Summer. Not only did that particular song usher in a new era of synthesized pop that would continue into the 1980s, Bellotte and Moroder would later go on to collaborate with Daft Punk, helping to connect today’s EDM to its roots. 

Ultra synthesized pop is what we think of when we think of classic 80s hits like “Take On Me” and the song that is today considered one of the first house records, “On and On,” by Jesse Saunders. The ultra synthesized pop of the 80s brought the level of synth up a notch, but the music of the 1970s and 80s still wouldn’t be recognizable to today’s EDM fans. It wasn’t until the  1990s when the sounds we know today were introduced via techno, house, hardcore rave, dub, trance, and drum and bass music. EDM exploded in popularity in Europe, where it eventually spread from rave culture into night clubs. Popular EDM songs in the 90s included “Strings of Life” by Derrick May, which helped introduce techno in the US. 

While momentum continued to build in the 1990s, it wasn’t until the early 2000s that EDM became a major part of mainstream American popular culture with the introduction of producers like Daft Punk, Avicii, Hardwell, Diplo, Martin Garrix, Tiesto, David Guetta, and Skrillex. No longer was EDM limited to raves and clubs; in the 2000s, all you had to do to hear EDM was turn on any Billboard Top 40 radio station. Today, EDM sounds are used by most mainstream pop and hip-hop artists, including everyone from Drake to Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Marshmello, and Lady Gaga. Even if you consider yourself unfamiliar with EDM, if you listen to popular music today, one of your favorite songs probably fits into the genre.

Origins of Riddim

It’s believed that the term “riddim” was first coined by Jakes around 2012. Riddim is the Jamaican patois (slang) pronunciation of the English word “rhythm,” and it refers to the instrumental accompaniment of a song in dancehall and reggae. Riddim is seen as a subgenre of dubstep, which is considered a subgenre of dub, which is a subgenre of EDM. That’s a lot of subgenres! Dub was born in London in the late 90s and is characterized by overwhelming bass, occasional vocals, clipped samples, and reverberant drums. It’s considered a fairly aggressive type of EDM, so if you’re listening to dub, you can be certain that there’s plenty of headbanging going on around you. The three subgenres of dub include dubstep, trap, and glitch-hop. Dubstep is characterized by a high number of beats per minute and rhythmic percussion patterns with huge drops. Riddim is considered the grime, swaggy side of dubstep by its enthusiasts, who view it as a simple style with its own culture. Others view it as a subgenre of dubstep that harkens back to dubstep’s early days but doesn’t create anything new. As the saying goes, “all riddim is dubstep, but not all dubstep is riddim.”

Riddim Characteristics

How you describe riddim depends a great deal on whether you love it or hate it. Riddim lovers would describe it as minimalist and focused on the flow and vibe, with the rhythm of the track being the most important characteristic. Riddim is largely built on loose drum arrangements and can sound repetitive and chaotic at times. Percussive triplets and extreme bass lines are also major hallmarks of riddim, which rarely uses any vocal overlays, heavy melodies, or crazy chord cadences. Riddim is often described as aggressive and swampy, and many people associate it with the underground dubstep scene, although it has become much more mainstream over the past few years. Riddim typically features 140 to 150 beats per minute, like dubstep, but is considered to have more space and wide delays between sounds. This is major headbanging music, and “chaotic” is definitely one way to describe the energy that builds on the dancefloor when riddim comes on. If you're attending a riddim show, you'd probably wear something more edgy than your standard rave 'fit.

Controversy

The controversy over riddim is largely a tale as old as time - the battle between the old and the new. Primarily, the controversy surrounding riddim as a subgenre is based on the belief that it isn’t a subgenre at all, but rather, a return to earlier forms of dubstep. Much of the issue surrounds the fact that newcomers to the scene may be inclined to “find” riddim and think it’s something new because they are unfamiliar with previous sounds of the subgenre. Dubstep purists and people who do not view riddim as a subgenre believe that it should simply be called “dubstep.” Dubstep began to take off in the United States in the early 2010s with the release of Skrillex’s EP, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites. Around this time, EDM enthusiasts noticed a split in dubstep and a new era was ushered in featuring screeching synths and long build-ups with a big drop. At this point, dubstep began to move into two different directions. The music that trended more towards the mainstream became known as, "brostep", while the music that resonated with the underground became known as riddim. Today, the sound is very different from mainstream dubstep, which often features heavy melodies and vocal tracks, but purists state that riddim is simply a return to dubstep’s roots rather than an evolution of the subgenre.

Popular Artists

Because riddim is considered underground by many, dubstep artists and riddim producers popular within the subgenre are not as well known as popular artists from other subgenres. However, riddim is currently experiencing a boom in popularity. Two of the biggest riddim artists are Subfiltronik, who is credited with establishing what we consider the riddim sound today, and Shiverz, one of the most prominent riddim DJs in the world. Other popular artists who have been making riddim since before it was cool include Megalodon, Herobust, Boogie T, Bloodthinnerz, Deemed, Juju, and Roto, along with crews like the Wizards, the Akatsuki Chop Music Crew, and the Monsters crew.

Popular Tracks

If we had to pick one quintessential riddim song that encapsulates the qualities of the subgenre, it would be “Psycho Blockz” by Subfiltronik. Other huge hits include “Yasuo” by Crowell and Bommer, which is generally regarded as the first true riddim song, with new music coming out every day. One of the best places to find new riddim music is the riddim subreddit, which features tons of new tracks and discussion about the subgenre daily. 

Where to Listen

Riddim might still be considered slightly underground, but you can hear it at many different raves and festivals. Lost Lands is a music festival known to feature riddim artists, as is the Imagine Music Festival, and other dubstep festivals are great options for hearing riddim. You can also find riddim artists on soundcloud, spotify, and other forums, including live nation radio.

Whether you love it or hate it, riddim has now been around for nearly ten years and unlike other trends within the EDM genre, it appears that it’s here to stay.

In short, Imagine Music Festival is a four-day aquatic adventure filled with circus acts, pool parties, transformative workshops, art, wellness classes, silent discos, field games, electrifying performances and more. If you’ve taken a look at this year’s lineup for Imagine Music Festival (IMF) in Atlanta, Georgia, you know this fest is jam-packed with talented female artists who are showing what it means to be a boss babe in the EDM world. 

I’m stoked to see every single incredible woman on the lineup this year. However, there is one industry queen who is the sole reason why myself, every artist and the entire staff and fanbase will be diving deep into our underwater wonderland this September. 

Meet Madeleine (Maddy) Goodhand; a boss babe, industry influencer and the founder of Imagine Music Festival, along with her husband, Glenn Goodhand.

I had the privilege to sit down with Maddy and discover what it means to be one of the masterminds behind the nationally-recognized wonderland. 

Originally from Finland, Goodhand is no stranger to adventure, growing up in Switzerland, Beijing, and Hong Kong. 

“My family moved to the States to Atlanta in '99 when I was 12. I speak both Swedish and English,” says Goodhand. 

While working in the nightclub scene, Maddy and Glenn decided they wanted to break through their current mold and create shows without any creative restrictions or barriers. 

“We did not want to have any walls, we wanted a blank canvas that we could create the exact environment that we had envisioned,” says Goodhand. “We wanted to choose our staff and work with the best people in the industry. We wanted to radiate positive energy and spread light, and believed that by creating a good team and a group of individuals that believed in what we were doing we could create magic and a festival that felt different from the others.”

That’s when the aquatic fairytale was born.

Imagine began as a two-day festival in the middle of Atlanta, Georgia. Goodhand shares that starting an electric wonderland didn’t come without its fair share of challenges, one of which included losing the fest’s original venue.

“[The biggest challenge was] being able to fit our big dreams into our small budget,” she explains. “Also, that first year we lost our venue four months before the event. It ended up being a blessing because we ended up at the Historic Fourth Ward Park in downtown Atlanta, which was absolutely beautiful.”

Imagine quickly began to explode in popularity, and after its second year, the fest had already outgrown its first home.

“We didn't want to move, but if we had to, we wanted to choose the biggest place we could find so we had infinite room to grow. Going to Atlanta Motor Speedway and adding camping AND a third day all in the same year made a statement to the world the type of festival we wanted to become,” states Goodhand. “It was a huge undertaking at the time, and was very challenging, but I'm glad we took the leap and pulled it off.”

The festival is independently operated by the Goodhands, with help from their hand-selected team members rallying beside them. 

Maddy says that herself, Glenn, and the rest of the Imagine team have spent each year improving the festival’s production, making it more and more memorable for guests. 

“We keep a close ear to the ground and are always asking our guests and friends in the community how we can improve...This constant tweaking and paying attention to what our guests want, we feel, has led us to experience such rapid growth,” states Goodhand. 

This year, the festival is expected to be the most mystical adventure yet, with new themes and experiences to elevate the underwater world to the next level.

“This year we have introduced the theme “What Lies Deep at the Bottom of the Ocean” inspired by Seven Lions track, "Ocean." Our stage designs and festival decor are playing off the theme which is super cool,” shares Goodhand. “We have also switched up the layout and are adding some fun new areas with different fun things like pop up performances, vendors, themed bars, and games. We are also working closely with the artists to develop some really neat Meet & Greet opportunities and new VIP experiences.” 

Goodhand adds that while it hasn’t always been easy to earn respect as a young woman in what she describes as, “a man’s world,” she is using her platform as a successful woman in the industry to boost her fellow females.

“When I have the opportunity to talk to our entire staff and inspire other young women to be in a leadership position, it’s very rewarding as I feel I have broken through the struggle,” she says.

In addition to promoting strong female staff, Goodhand is showcasing the fierce female talent in the industry through this year’s stellar lineup. 

“The lineup is awesome, [I] can't wait to see our stacked female lineup with Rezz, Alison Wonderland, Leah Culver, Anna Lunoe, Nora En Pure,” shares Goodhand. “And of course I'm excited for Diplo and Tipper.”

Goodhand says that she is thrilled to see the fest come together this year, and describes the entire experience as “humbling and exciting.” 

“I feel like I'm watching this magical moment in the universe - to see a vision come to life and so many smiling faces and guests having the time of their [lives],” she explains. “I'm proud of us [for] being a homegrown, independent festival and being compared to the biggest festivals in the world. Personally, I'm proud of overcoming many challenges and being able to grow from those experiences. I think its a mutual pride we share with our whole community.”

Goodhand adds that she sees no limitations to what Imagine may become in the future.

“We are still in our early stages, so the possibilities are really endless for where we can go and the type of festival we will become,” she states.

This was the most exciting news I’ve gotten in a while. This was an opportunity for me to attend one of my favorite festivals in a completely different city while representing homegameauction, one of my favorite brands. I planned out my trip as soon as possible and all I had left to do was patiently wait for the weekend of EDCO to come.

Before I knew it, time flew by and I was finally on my way to Orlando. As soon as I got there, I was greeted by some of the other Unicorns at the airport. I had talked with them through social media beforehand, but getting to meet them in person got me so much more excited for the upcoming next few days. We headed to the hotel and planned out our outfits for the weekend!

Heading to the venue was one of the most exhilarating moments. As we approached Tinker Field, I could faintly hear the music and bass and see parts of the main stage. It was finally happening! We walked into the venue and I could see all the excitement from all the ravers. As soon as we made it through the doors, we were greeting other ravers and trading tons of kandi. Some people already recognized us as the homegameauction Unicorns and it was exciting to meet homegameauction' family, trade kandi with them and take photos together. I’m a big fan of exploring the venue, seeing the different stages and different artists, so it was perfect for me to be a Unicorn as we had to constantly venture around, going back and forth between the stages. Day one’s lineup was stacked with tons of bass-y artists at CircuitGROUNDS, one of the stages, for the Bassrush Experience. I was most excited to see Bassnectar, as I have never seen him before and have heard so many great experiences from my friends at his sets. We also checked out Midnight Tyrannosaurus, Boogie T b2b Squnto, Space Jesus and Ganja White Night at Circuit Grounds. I definitely headbanged a ton at this stage and with so many other ravers who rocked homegameauction clothes! The Unicorns traded loads of kandi with ravers at this stage. We, of course, stayed at the mainstage, kineticFIELD a bit too, and got to see Timmy Trumpet, JOYRYDE, Alesso, Martin Garrix and Don Diablo - who was my favorite set this day at this stage. One thing that I love about Florida is that so many people know how to shuffle so I definitely got to shuffle and dance my heart out at this stage. At whatever stage we were at, the production never failed: there were so many amazing fireworks and TONS of lasers all throughout the night, and lots of performers walking around. It’s called carnival for a reason and EDC never fails to give an amazing vibe an atmosphere, unlike any other festival.

One day down and hours of dancing, trading kandi, and meeting tons of ravers later, we were on our way out of EDC. We looked back on our Instagram and Snapchat stories and reliving the memories of day one through these stories. Despite all the great memories and experiences that occurred on day one, we still had another day to go! The second day of EDCO was way more stacked in my opinion and I was looking forward to seeing tons of artists I hadn’t seen before.

Walking in Day Two was just as exciting as the first day. I was getting the butterflies in my stomach all over again. We could tell that the excitement was even greater and there were tons more of ravers attending this day with it being the weekend. We kicked off our social media takeover and took tons more photos Day 2: the weather was perfect and we had already run into so many homegameauction family!

This day had tons of different artists that we were all excited to see! KineticFIELD featured some of my favorite artists, such as Kaskade, Alison Wonderland, Tiesto, and Vini Vici, who we all were able to see! My favorite at that stage was Vini Vici: psytrance is one of my favorite genres and their set was super trippy, especially with the lasers and pyro that were synced with their music. circuitGROUNDS had a completely different vibe this day: not many bass artists at all, but tons of house artists including my favorites such as Malaa and Tchami, and future bass artists like Illenium and Gryffin. During Tchami’s set at circuitGROUNDS, Vanessa Seco, a famous shuffler, held a shuffle meetup. A bunch of ravers showed up and got to shuffle their butts off during this meet-up: I got the chance to dance in their as well. The vibes were great and no matter how experienced or inexperienced people were, everyone was welcomed in the circle and cheered on by fellow ravers.

All throughout the weekend we got to meet so many people, including tons of ravers that rocked homegameauction gear, and as well as people pretty well known in the rave community, such as Rave Dora and Jake Ryan.

When I’m at festivals, I usually only socialize with my group of friends, but going as part of the Unicorn Crew really made me step out of my comfort zone and talk to so many more people and initiate conversations. We went into EDC with tons of kandi to trade and ended up with only a few, so we definitely made an effort to talk to as many ravers as we could.

I would definitely go to another festival as a Unicorn again! This was a life-changing experience for me and definitely gave me a different way to experience festivals. I learned that it is always great to talk to lots of different ravers and trade kandi with as many people as possible: it was such a touching moment when I would give first-time ravers their first kandi and teaching them how to trade. I learned a lot about what it means to be a great raver and can’t wait to apply all that I’ve learned at the future festivals that I’m attending. Hopefully, I’ll be back at EDC Orlando next year with the Unicorns!

Yup, a fan base really did all that, and the love doesn’t stop there. The Cult has been known for grand gestures of love and support.

“It was my lovely lady’s first time at any kind of EDM show, and also the night I proposed to her. She was overwhelmed to find that The Cult had been in on it for months, and people she had never met were there cheering us on. [It was] completely magical.” - Cult of REZZ member, Hannah Olson.

The community has also been known for “Cult Meetups;” festival gatherings where members meet one another, vibe and chat. If you’re planning on rocking some REZZ gear at your next festival, prepare yourself. You may end up being welcomed in with open arms. (This is me at my first meetup)!

David Noriega was at Audiotistic this past year when in the middle of REZZ’s set, a new friend noticed his gear and tapped him on the arm.

“The Cult is meeting over there,” they whispered, welcoming him to his first new-family meetup.

Cult Administrator, Angelika Morris, says she can see the love and magic that flourishes within in the group, 

“In The Cult, there is a genuine sense of community amongst people who just happen to know each other through the internet, despite demographics,” says Morris. “That ranges from simple things - like giving someone a place to stay at a festival or comforting someone if their pet dies - to truly amazing instances - like individuals who have tried to commit suicide and the community bands together to reach out. Just this morning someone shared their struggle with suicide and wanting to go to REZZ Rocks because Isabelle’s music saved her [life], and in the comments, everyone was offering to help pay for her ticket and bring her out.”

The Cult welcomes all, regardless of age, race, gender, location, sexual orientation, ethnicity, etc. The only requirement is a love for REZZ and good energy.

“There is this sense that no matter who you are, no matter where you come from, if you're here to support REZZ that also means you're here to support one another. [We’re] like a family.” Morris adds.

Sub-communities like The Cult of REZZ are what set apart rave culture from any other music community. The undeniable love and radiant energy that ravers create lets us be our beautiful, magical selves. It allows us to discover crowds of new family members that support our space-bound dreams, every twist, shuffle and headbang of the way. Rave culture creates communities of love and acceptance, and let’s be honest here, it feels good to feel loved and accepted.

How did you get started with makeup?

I've loved makeup since I was a little girl, it's something I've studied since I could read; I always had my head in a book or magazine, there are makeup facts that I read at age 10 that still pop up in my conversations today. I started playing with doing other people's makeup when I was in high school but didn't actively pursue it as a full-time career until 5-6 years ago. I went to makeup school to get my foot in the door with internships, met amazing people along the way (like homegameauction photographer, Gregorio Campos), and it's been my life since.

Would you consider being a MUA your dream job? Can you tell us a little backstory about how you achieved your current level of success?

It really is a dream job! I worked in the corporate world for about 7 years before I changed careers. Although I learned a lot in my corporate days, I hated being locked up inside, doing the same mundane things every day. I was self-taught but knew I needed to find my way to a set, so I attended makeup school. Right after graduating, the school owner took me with her to a magazine shoot and the rush was something I was immediately addicted to. I have never felt happier or more at home than I do when I am working. I did a lot of unpaid work for practice, to build my portfolio, and really learn the ropes. About a year in, I met Gregorio Campos and we clicked creatively right away. He and I would shoot a few days a week, and we started getting clients and branching out. I credit Greg with so much of my success because he never let me give up and he still helps me now, he's like my brother!

What’s your favorite part of your job?

Making people feel beautiful. I have the privilege of working with women and men from ages 3 to 90; no matter what age we are, we still need to feel loved and noticed. Sometimes, I get to work on grandmas at weddings that haven't felt pretty in many years, and seeing their eyes sparkle with happiness when they're glammed up makes my heart so full!

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

Recently, is having to explain to everyday women that many of the photos they are comparing themselves to on Instagram or Pinterest are heavily edited and photoshopped. I get to work on all kinds of people, and the most beautiful ones in my eyes are the people that are genuinely happy and at peace with themselves. I wish more women would embrace that they are perfect in their own skin, that freckles and lines are a part of what makes them shine, that pores are meant to exist! I think because I get to be so close to so many people, I find magic and beauty in the little things that make us unique.

How/when did you begin working for homegameauction?

Gregorio Campos had me do makeup for a shoot with INTO THE AM (homegameauction' sister brand), which lead to us meeting CK, the Merchandise Manager, for both brands :), they've become like family since then!

What’s been your favorite homegameauction look that you created?

There are too many to list here! I love that I get to color outside of the lines on set with homegameauction!

Can you give us a few festival makeup tips for making your makeup/jewels stay on all night?

Spirit gum is your best friend, it has a great hold for jewels. Ben Nye Final seal setting spray is amazing.

Do you have any go-to products for doing festival makeup?

I try to use waterproof eyeliners and mascaras; my favorite liners are by Marc Jacobs (they don't budge!) and Lash Paradise Mascara from Loreal. Glitter is also a must, along with good glue. Note on glitter: if you are using it on your eyes, make sure it is marked as safe for eye use. Glitters that are too big, with corners, will cut up your eyeball and make for a very glitter-less few months after.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I started asking for makeup at age 2, haha. I'm also bilingual and a total bookworm speed reader.

If you could attend any music festival in the world, what would it be?

Probably EDC with the homegameauction family.

What's been your favorite rave-fashion trend that you've seen over the years?

The newest bodysuits from homegameauction that have off the shoulder tops and long flowing sleeves.

Do you have any advice for other girls and boys seeking to become MUA?

Work hard, be kind, be honest, and be humble. It takes some time to get there, but if you stay consistent and connect with good people, you'll be fine. You have to have patience and ALWAYS remain a student, the second you think you know everything, you're out. Know your worth and stand up for yourself :)

_angelawhite_ - What do you look for in recruiting new unicorns?

If someone is not too familiar with the Unicorn Crew, on the surface it can seem like a free ticket to a festival, free outfit, and features on our social media. Which is a pretty cool deal. However, the Unicorn Crew is so much more than that. The Unicorn Crew is a festival experience different from any other. Unicorns spend the entire festival with each other, and usually they’ve never met before. They roam around the festival constantly, meeting other attendees and engaging with all people who could be new to the brand or are already familiar with the brand. One of our main goals is to promote rave culture in a positive light and help other attendees feel both welcomed into the community and educated on its culture. When we read through Unicorn Crew applications, we look for someone who fully understands this and is more than willing to take on this experience wholeheartedly. It’s also something we like to think of as a reward for our customers and supporters who truly know our brand and what it’s about. Knowledge of our brand and expression of how it has impacted his or her life is always a plus.

 I do! I had dread extensions for 2 full years after my first Burning Man. Dreads are a big part of BM culture as they protect your hair from the dust storms and are easy to maintain. My first burn was a truly eye opening experience for me and when I got home, I didn’t want to take them out. I had become a new version of myself there and to me my dreads were a representation of that. I think there’s definitely a chance they’ll be back soon and many times throughout my life. I picture myself as a crazy hippy grandma with dreads someday, smoking weed on my porch and telling my grandkids stories about raves in the early 2000s.

homegameauction was created by our CEO Brian and his now wife then girlfriend, Christine, in October 2011 (#coupleswhoravetogetherstaytogether). When I came on board, we spent a lot of time talking about what the brand should represent and what it was going to be. We ourselves became ravers in the era of Hard Haunted Mansion, EDCLA, TAO, Armin’s spread hands as the epitome of the “feels,” the explosion of dubstep and the transformation of what everyone called “Techno” at the time into “EDM.” Thus, homegameauction was born into that and shaped from it, but it has evolved along with the community and culture into something so much bigger than we ever forecasted it to be and faster, too. We have always strived to make homegameauction more than just a brand but literally a part of the culture and an outlet to help expand that culture, contribute to the community that has so wonderfully supported us, and shed a positive light on rave culture in general. That part has been easy and natural for us. The amount of support we received for it has forced us to grow a lot faster than we were ready to at times and scaling to a larger level of business and as a company has not been easy. But it’s been awesome and I’m so grateful for all of it.

EDC is an amazing festival and in my opinion, the biggest party in the world. I am looking forward to it being in May this year, although I keep forgetting how it’s earlier and then freaking out about how there’s still so much to do when I remember that. I’m also looking forward to meeting homegameauction customers. I remember the first festival I ever went to where I saw people wearing homegameauction and almost crying with excitement. I wanted to walk up to every single person and tell them they were beautiful and how amazing they looked in their outfit, although I was lot shyer then. I still get that feeling every single festival and it’s overwhelmingly wonderful.

We used to have a retail store in Campbell, now our headquarters are located there. Our flagship store is located not too far away in West Covina, CA off the 10.

viviclaries - Since some of you have been raving for many years, do you ever get tired of it? Or not as excited as before?

It’s a different feeling of excitement I want to say. There are some festivals I’ve been to more than 8 years in a row. With those festivals, I get excited to meet the attendees and see new sets I haven’t seen there before. I definitely get reminded of that feeling of wonder and awe when I meet someone who is there for the first time. I get excited for them. To be honest though, I still have trouble sleeping the night before every festival I go to. I’m like a little kid sometimes. Tiny Dancer absolutely loooooooves it when I wake her up at 8AM jumping up and down and saying we need to get ready for a festival when gates don’t open until 6PM. I just can’t help it.

Baehanchan and lisamariesedano  - What has been your favorite festival/event?

This question is incredibly difficult to answer. It’s like asking someone to pick their favorite child. There are so many cool aspects to so many different festivals and I really feel weird focusing on one. If I had to though I’d mention Electric Forest. Electric Forest last year literally changed my life. I love when festivals expand on the culture and provide ways for attendees to enhance themselves so much further than just experiencing the amazing music they have to offer. With Electric Forest’s art and performances you can immerse yourself into an entirely new world. Not only that but they also have programs and activities that both allow you to expand your mind and connect with other attendees in so many different ways. One of my favorites is Her Forest, it focuses on empowering women and it’s incredibly inspiring.

 

bejoux_How tall are you? You inspire me to wear tall shoes!

I’m 5’7” I don’t normally wear platforms but I love the shoes we bring in and tried wearing them for the first time at Beyond Wonderland this year. It wasn’t too hard to get around and I enjoyed how cute they were and being taller, but you definitely won’t catch me wearing them at a festival with rocky or bumpy terrain.

ladyravepool - What is the best advice you have to give to other women business leaders in the rave community, trying to start their own or be apart of something huge..what would you tell the up and coming ladies to focus on most?

If you’re starting your own business, cultivating a team of people who will complement your strengths and have the same vision as you are the most important advice I’d have to give. As a leader, you need to understand that you’re not going to be the best at everything and it’s going to take a lot of trust on both sides of your working relationship. The most solid foundation for that is shared vision and a passion for your goal.

If you’re looking to join a team, be confident in the skills you’ve acquired thus far no matter how far along you are in your career. Really figure out what it is that you bring the table and don’t be afraid to articulate that when you’re reaching out or networking. I can’t tell you how many times people have reached out to me and expressed that they “just want to be involved” and “would be willing to do anything” in order to be a part of our brand. The people who really stand out to me are those who are upfront about what they see themselves doing and the experience they offer. If your dream job doesn’t happen right away, find opportunities that you believe are a step in the right direction. Work hard at those opportunities no matter what they are. I got my first job the day I got my driver’s license at a Coldstone Creamery. I became a Shift Leader there within a few weeks, and I would never have realized some of the leadership skills I learned when I was just 16 years old helped shape the managerial skills I have today, many years later. Your dreams won’t work unless you do, and your hard work will put you where luck will find you. I got very lucky in my career so far, but I would never attribute all of it to luck. Don’t ever give up on yourself.

anananananananananana - Do you have a mantra to motivate yourself? Or a book or something that just pumps you up to keep doing what you do?

Two things drive me more than anything in life. The first is being an unconventional woman in business and supporting other women doing the same. My team is more inspirational to me than they’ll ever know. They are some of the smartest, most talented women and I have the amazing pleasure of leading them. Secondly, you could say my life motto is, "work hard, play hard." I am definitely the type of person to put my career first always and never stop working or striving to be more efficient and better at what I do. At the same time, I’m driven by my passion for festivals and when I’m not in the office running meetings and juggling projects, I’m on the dancefloor womping until the sun comes up or in the desert dancing under the moon.

lahefa - When did you start raving? And what drew you into the rave culture?

I’ve been into dance music since the early 2000s. I grew up in Seattle and went to a few underground parties at a pretty early age. Kids in my high school made fun of me for liking “techno” and driving around in my car blasting 9PM by ATB after football games. My first massive was HARD Haunted Mansion in 2009 at the Shrine and my first Southern California event. I was completely enthralled by the number of friendly people I met. When I was younger, I was a lot shyer and introverted than I am now. You would never catch me dancing on stage or talking to thousands of people on Snapchat about how much I love the community that we are involved in. Something about the community and the culture I experienced then and at all the events I went to following made me feel like I belonged to something bigger and that this was a place where I could show my true self. I wanted to share this feeling with the world, and somehow couldn’t shake the notion that this wasn’t just something I was going to be passionate about, it was something I was called to do.

Xxby_belxx - What inspires your outfits or ideas?

To be honest, I don’t think I’m the most stylish individual who works at homegameauction. There are days I wake up and I wish I could wear my pajamas to work. I like to focus on the business and analytics over the creative side most days. So when it comes to dressing for festivals, I like to just kinda go with the flow and wear what makes me feel good over everything else. When I’m matching with my team that’s when the crazy styling comes out. There’s usually spreadsheets involved - it gets intense. In terms of homegameauction inspiration, we let our customers show us what they want. We’re always listening to feedback and bringing home ideas we come up with at festivals when talking with our customers. I’m also incredibly inspired by all the ravers who have created their own brands, like Rolita Couture and Lunautics. It’s a huge goal of mine to continue to discover these brands and help use our voice in the community to give them a spotlight to grow.

Brittanyyyannn - How did you get into Iheartraves/INTO THE AM? Did you go to school and get a degree in anything? If not, would you?

I went to college and got a degree in Business Marketing. I had no idea in college that I wanted to get into festival fashion. I knew I wanted to work in EDM in some capacity, but was more interested in the music side and artist management. I got incredibly lucky finding my homegameauction family and being able to build this brand. It allowed me to truly become the person I always wanted to become and in doing that my dreams of growing this brand and inspiring others grew and they continue to grow today. There is so much I want to accomplish now and I’m so excited to experience whatever happens next. I think my education helped and was a great foundation, but it’s definitely the passion that got me here and also what brought my amazing team together. I wouldn’t recommend to get a degree or not getting a degree to people who are looking to do something similar. I know people who’ve started their own businesses who don’t have them. It really depends on your own unique situation.

Vegederian - What are you inspired by??

As a female in business, I’m inspired by many different things. At the end of the day, it’s homegameauction customers who inspire me more than anything. I have an amazing privilege of being able to meet supporters of our brand at every festival I go to and it’s something I look forward to immensely. The number of people who have opened up to me and shared their stories with me on how our brand has impacted them is the reason why I get out of bed every morning.

Aeryellerr What wakes you up in the morning? What drives your soul?

Coffee wakes me up in the morning, can’t live without it. Inspiring other women and men to follow their own dreams and be confident in who they are at festivals and so so far beyond is what drives my soul.

I sat down with Jamie, an artist, body painter and founder of this amazing company, to dig a little deeper into the creation of this fabulous new brand.

Tessla: So, I know you’ve been face and body painting for years. What made you transition into making your own glitter?

Jamie: I decided that I wanted to create my own line of festival glitter because I've incorporated glitter into my face and body paintings for a really long time. I've got about 12 years of experience using a variety of different types of face glitters on clients, models, festival goers, and of course myself!  I felt that I was ready to use my professional experience to create an amazing product that is easy to use and that is available to everyone, not just professional makeup artists.

Tessla: Why is making biodegradable glitter important to you? What’s it made out of?

Jamie: Making biodegradable glitter is important to me because I want to give people a more sustainable option when it comes to choosing glitter and cosmetics. It gives eco-conscious consumers a better way to have a guilt-free experience and feel good about the products they are using.

Our DiscoEyes line of Biodegradable glitters are made from sustainably grown eucalyptus trees sourced from farms in Europe. We mix the special blends with 91% organic aloe vera leaf juice, plus a bit of organic lavender, to create a beautiful glitter gel that glides on smooth and stays on for hours. This is ideal for ravers and festival goers because it allows for easy application on the dancefloor without having to use harsh glues or adhesives, or even a mirror!

Something funny I want to mention is that the name DiscoEyes came so randomly.  In 2012 right before Burning Man, I found a framed poster of Mona Lisa at a local yard sale. I glued glitter to Mona Lisa's face and painted over her so she looked like she had makeup on. Then I  got some glitter paper, cut out the letters "DiscoEyes" and glued it to the poster. I used the DiscoEyes poster to decorate my mobile glitter booth at the Burn. Little did I know it would be the name of my glitter company 5 years later :)

Tessla: I also know you have painted murals and done things in public places in that past. What has been your favorite site-specific art piece?

Jamie: I would have to say my favorite piece of public art is a house that I painted in a residential area in Long Beach. It makes so many people smile when they walk past it, and I've been told it's even brought the neighborhood together! Like wearing glitter, creating art is all about self-expression, and it also inspires others to escape from their everyday routines. Art and glitter reminds us to have fun in life, and that we don't have to be so serious :)

Tessla: What was your first festival/rave?

Jamie: My first rave was called Narnia, and that was in 1999. We got a bunch of friends together and drove out to a place called the "dustbowl" near San Diego. I remember walking up to the rave and being entranced by the thumping bass. We explored all the different areas and rooms and danced all night until the morning. The people were just magical and I knew I had stumbled upon something very special!

Tessla: How has festival and rave culture inspired you?

Jamie: At festivals and raves, creativity goes above and beyond. People really stretch the limits of what can be done! Festival and rave culture have been a huge part of my life since high school. I am now in my 30's, and rave and festival culture are more apart of my life than ever! You can become the person you've always wanted to be, without being judged. We're just all trying to express ourselves and create an amazing experience. I hope that DiscoEyes Glitter can embody the same ideals, and help people to let their lights shine.

Tessla: Can you give us a festival pro-tip?

Jamie: My festival pro-tip would be to carry your DiscoEyes festival glitter in your backpack or fannypack so you always have it handy. Then when you see someone whose vibe you love, ask them if they'd like some too!  It's a great way to meet new people, and you'll be able to spot their shining faces in the crowd. You might even meet some of your new festie besties!

Tessla: What are you most excited about in beauty/fashion right now?

Jamie: The most exciting thing in beauty and fashion to me are the unique styles and creations! I feel like we are in the most creative era of fashion right now, because people are taking more chances and wearing the most brightly colored, eclectic, and off-the-wall outfits. There are no rules! And that's what makes it fun.

Tessla: What’s your favorite mythical creature and why?

Jamie: I would have to say to this day Unicorns are my favorite. When I was a kid, I drew them in my notebooks in school, and during recess, on rainy days I used to charge .25 cents to make unicorn drawings for the other kids. It was then that I decided to have my own business when I grew up.

Tessla: What’s a song or DJ you’ll never stop listening to?

Jamie: I will never stop listening to Mark Farina's "Mushroom Jazz" albums. I'd listen to these albums on the way to parties and raves, or just hanging out. They never get old.

Tessla: What does the future hold for Disco Eyes?

Jamie: The future of DiscoEyes is all about creating fun festival makeup products for self-expression and making them accessible to all. The icing on the cake is that our products are sustainably produced, and contain the best possible ingredients - I hope that this will inspire other cosmetic products to do the same. I see DiscoEyes growing to be a trusted brand that people get inspired by and feel great using when choosing a face glitter for festivals.

If you're active within the EDM community on Instagram, you're probably already following @Mynamesnotmelissa. Whether you follow her for her modeling pictures, those killer makeup photos or because you actually want to know if her name is really Melissa (will we ever find out?!), there's no doubt that @mynamesnotmelissa is both beautiful and talented.

Personally, I was intrigued by her username and her beautiful and colorful photos and I started following her a few years ago after Paradiso. Little did I know that I'd have the pleasure of working with her a few years later, thanks to homegameauction! @Mynamesnotmelissa began modeling for homegameauction last year and modeled twice last month for us. In between shoots, she was able to sit down and answer some questions. 

How did you get involved in the Rave Community?

I had gone to only one little show before I went to my first festival so I didn't really know what I was getting myself into at the time. One of my friends told me he was going to Paradiso and invited me to join his group. I think what really got me into the rave community when I went was how open and loving everyone is. I thought it was amazing how complete strangers will take you in and treat you like family. After that festival, I was hooked. 

Your Instagram name is definitely unique! Can you give us any information on the backstory behind it?

I get asked about my Instagram name so much! I created my Instagram when I was in college and I was trying to keep it low key while I finished my major so I came up with a crazy handle using part of my real name. Now everyone has no idea what to call me and it's kinda fun so I've stuck with it!

What’s a fun fact most people don’t know about you?

I have this thing for crazy ice cream spots. Ever since I moved to LA I discovered that there are tons of cool ice cream places and I want to experience every single one of them. I'm all about the wacky flavors and random toppings, too. I've had everything from an IPA ice cream to rolled ice cream with fruity pebbles and captain crunch mixed in it. 

What do you like to do in your non-raving time?

I love to spend my time doing the things I love, like taking my time to do my makeup, going to the beach, and eating ice cream. 

What's you Bucket list festival?

Tomorrowland is for sure on this list! I also want to experience Defqon.1. And some more east coast festivals, like Ultra.

Describe what PLUR means to you.

PLUR to me is what really stole my heart about raving.  It's more than just trading Kandi to me. Being able to go to an event and know that no matter what your race, background, appearance, or music taste is that you'll be loved and accepted for who you are. For anyone who has never felt like they belonged anywhere, I promise that if you go to a rave and shown PLUR, you'll feel right at home. The concept of PLUR is something that means enough to me that I try to carry into my life outside of raving because I think it's something that needs to be shared with the world.

How do you connect with homegameauction?

I've been in love with homegameauction ever since I started raving. I feel like the fashion design is totally my style. I love all of the bright colors and crazy designs, like the trippy patterns and sequins and glitter on everything! It also means a lot to me that iHR has clothing that fits all sizes. I love that there's such a variety of style that there's something for everyone to wear. 

Describe your first experience with homegameauction.

My first experience with homegameauction was so magical. This might be dorky but I can tell you exactly where I was and what I was doing when I got my first message from IHR. I actually cried when I found out I was going to do my first photoshoot. It was such an amazing experience getting to finally work with a brand I've been in love with for years. I loved getting to try on all these adorable outfits and learning more about the company as we shot. The best part was getting to tell everyone that my dream became a reality and show all my friends the shots from that day. Everyone from back home was so surprised and excited for me when they saw me on the website and in emails! 

When/How did you begin modeling?

I started getting into modeling when I was in high school. My best friend's mom was a photographer and would take our pictures all the time and that's how I discovered my passion for modeling. I loved how photographers get this overwhelming excitement when you do something that they captured and they immediately know it's going to be a good shot. 

You have some crazy awesome makeup photos on your page! When did you decide you wanted to become a make up artist?

To be honest, I didn't really know much about makeup until pretty recent. One of my friend's girlfriends was amazing at it and after being around her, I realized that I didn't really know what I was doing. One day she let me come over and she walked me step by step through how she applies her makeup and taught me some of her techniques. After that I just started practicing and through practice and working at a spa as an MUA, I've discovered my own style and this new passion. 

Where do you get inspo for your amazing makeup looks?

I find a lot of inspiration in the art of other people. I've created looks based off of drawings, album cover art, photography, and much more. It also depends on what I want to do, like I use a lot of nature photography for eyeshadow inspo, but then I'll turn around look up creepy gory stuff for special effects inspo.

Do you have any advice for any aspiring models or make up artists?

I would say to never give up on your dreams and to continue to strive to push yourself to be the best that you can be. Always staying positive and having confidence in yourself will also be super helpful in making your dreams a reality. No matter how tough it gets just continue to push yourself to try to grow. 

Wanting to appreciate ravers who are flashy, confident, and passionate about rave fashion, Jesus (aka @asotdrop) and Jose (aka @PlurRabbit), created @EDMFashionistas to show appreciation for the rave community and to give fashion inspiration.

Jesus’ first rave was at an underground event in Miami 2009, but his first major music festival at Electric Daisy Carnival Orlando in 2012. Out of the countless festivals and events he has attended, his favorite was Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas in 2014.

“It was the first event with my West Coast friends that I met through social media,” Jesus reminisces. “With my Miami rave family that flew with me and my West Coast friends, we were all like a family.”

So, how did rave fashion come around for Jesus? His first rave outfits consisted of neon shorts and tank tops accessorized with spirit hoods and tights. Throughout his years of raving, he was later inspired by the club kids and how much they stood out. “I kind of like to look back at them and I incorporate some of the stuff I saw in them like boots, fur, and makeup,” explains Jesus.

He also looks to characters for outfit inspiration. “Sometimes [I get] a little on the scary side, like my fashionable Penny Wise costume for one of my favorite events, Escape [from Wonderland].”

Jesus’ advice to ravers wanting to expand their rave fashion game, “Think of things you like to inspire your outfit/costume. Check out Pinterest or Etsy and you’ll find many things that can inspire you. Sometimes coming up with an outfit takes time so little by little look more into your character and add things that you believe will look good! There are also so many people at festivals that look so amazing, you can always use ideas from others that inspire you and create your own look.”
