Stay Hydrated

When you’re in the crowd and in direct sunlight you end up getting dehydrated much faster. To combat this, make sure you’re drinking plenty of water. Even if you’re not feeling thirsty, just consciously take a few sips every now and again. 

Get your hands on a rave hydration backpack so you can fill up on water and not need to leave the crowd to refresh yourself. Look out for free water booths scattered around the rave!

Take Breaks

My rave friends and I call them ‘Boogie Breaks’! When we start to feel a little tired we like to exit the crowd, find a place to lay down, have a catch up on what we’ve seen so far and maybe even meet some new rave friends.

Rave responsibly and always listen to your body, don’t push it beyond its limits or you might run into the risk of needing to visit the medic tent or leave early. If you need a break to recharge, don't be afraid to say so!

Remember to Eat

Would you go to the gym on an empty stomach? Well, the same goes for raves. Dancing is as much a sport, it burns so much of your energy!

Fueling your body will assure you can stay at your peak levels of fun. Even if you’re not feeling hungry, on your next break just pass by a food vendor and grab a snack or smoothie, your body will thank you.

Opt for Comfortable Rave Wear

Wear light, comfortable and breathable rave wear. The secret is to stay away from anything itchy, that’s distracting or would prevent you from having fun.

Bonnaroo can be incredibly fun or be the complete opposite if you come unprepared! The event is just around the corner so I thought I’d provide tips and tricks that you’ll need to plan a successful and stress-free experience at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.

Do Your Research Before Buying Your Ticket

The festival’s website provides plenty of information on all the different ticket types available. If it’s your first time going, it’s worth reading through it to understand what’s included in each ticket to find the one that’s right for you. There are quite a few ticket options that determine the experience you'll have. You can do anything from GA to an ultra-VIP experience that includes a nicer camping area, golf cart transportation to each stage, unlimited food and drink and special viewing at each stage.

Always remember, festival admission tickets do not include camping passes, so you’ll need to buy them separately. You can also choose tiered camping passes based on the experience you want to have. Tickets and camping passes range from affordable prices to higher prices for a more luxury experience, but give a lot of variety to pick from. You can get both camping and festival passes here.

Plan How You’re Getting There Ahead of Time

Driving is the most popular travel option for Bonnaroovians. Most people drive into the festival, either by car, RV, or uHaul… But if driving isn’t your thing, rest assured there are also shuttle routes departing from different places to get you to the festival grounds. No matter which mode of transport you go for, you need to pre-book your pass with your festival ticket. Make sure you do so in advance before they sell out!

The drive to Manchester is about an hour outside of Nashville or about three and a half hours northwest of Atlanta. Both airports are easily accessible from most US cities and offer lots of rental car options.

Plan to Get There Early

When you’re making your travel plans, keep in mind that the sooner you arrive the closer to the festival entrance you’ll be! The campgrounds fill from front to back so as long as you plan your trip accordingly you won’t get stuck in one of the furthest campsites. Anticipate long lines as you get closer to the festival, so add at least an hour to your travel time for the time you'll spend waiting in line.

Packing is Essential, Be Prepared for Rain

Sunshine isn’t always in the forecast, it’s not uncommon for it to rain and for temperatures to drop. And when it rains at Bonnaroo it pours, so the festival grounds can get really muddy. Bring what you need to stay dry and warm if the weather turns:

• Warm layers
• Poncho
• Boots
• Thick sleeping bag/blanket

…But Also Be Prepared for Sunshine

On the other hand, it can also get very hot and sunny which requires a whole other list of essentials. Whatever you do, before you start packing check the weather forecast to ensure you have everything you need to enjoy your time at the festival. Here are a few necessities you should think about packing:

• Hat
• Sunglasses
• Sunscreen
• Hand fan
• Hydration pack

Bring the Right Footwear

Depending on which area you’re assigned to at the campgrounds, you might end up having to walk quite a distance to get to the thick of the action in Centeroo. Blisters can easily ruin your entire festival weekend so bring the right footwear and socks. Or if you can’t forego your platforms, make sure you have a few dollars to spare each day to catch a pedicab from the campgrounds to Centeroo, and back!

The Festival Grounds Get Dusty

When it doesn’t rain at Bonnaroo a giant cloud of dust will start to surface as soon as the masses of people start trampling all over the festival grounds. Make sure you bring a bandana or face mask to avoid ingesting heaps of dust.

Baby Wipes are Your Best Bet to Stay Clean

Bonnaroo showers are notoriously dirty and the queues can take forever! Arm yourself with some baby wipes to combat any sand, mud or sweat you encounter and need to wipe off.

Pack a Flashlight With Extra Batteries

The campgrounds are massive so finding your tent can be tricky, particularly late at night when it’s dark and you’re tired. Pack a flashlight to make it easier to find your way back! It will definitely come in handy when you’re walking through the campgrounds late at night and even in some parts of the festival.

Bring a Totem/Flag/Floatie

The festival is the size of a small town, over 100,000 people attend each year so it’s really easy to lose your friends in the crowd. Have a totem, flag or floatie that you can spot from a distance and you’ll never lose your group again! When you’re not using it in the crowd you can hang it at your campsite so you’ve got something to look out for when you’re walking back to your tent.

Arrange Your Ride for a Quick and Easy Car Check

Be mindful of what you pack, check Bonnaroo’s official list of prohibited items before you load up your vehicle to prepare for a seamless car check on arrival. Car checks are random but you never know if you’ll end up having your vehicle searched so always respect the rules and be prepared.

If You’re Traveling as a Group, Stay Together

Ensure that everyone in your group that wants to camp together gets in line together, this will guarantee you get to set up next to one another. Bonnaroo crew members won’t wait on your group and definitely won’t save spots for anyone on the campgrounds.

You are so much more than an attendee.

The word transformational implies transformation, which already gives away one of the more sacred parts of these experiences. Conversely to mainstream music festivals, the focus isn’t on the music and the lineup. These things certainly play a part but transformational festivals emphasize the more interactive parts of the festival that promote participation and ignite inspiration. Transformational festivals offer an immersive experience that encompasses everything from workshops, talks, activities, parties, meetings and really anything you can imagine. You’re not just an attendee but rather a participant in the whole experience.

At transformational festivals you’re encouraged to try new things and express yourself, creating new trains of thought that give you a fresh perspective on the world and your life. Leave your inhibitions at the door and just let the festival take you on a wondrous journey. They are truly life-altering experiences that will stay with you forever.

1. Read the Campground Rules Before Packing

Watching security rustle through your bag and dispose of prohibited items as soon as you arrive probably isn’t how you want to kickstart your Coachella weekend. There’s a whole list of items that are forbidden from the campgrounds, so before you start packing put in the time to read over the camping guidelines on the festival’s website.

2. Brace Yourself for Long Security Lines

Guards at the entrance turn cars inside out to make sure that the campsite guidelines are upheld and that no prohibited items are taken into the festival grounds, so expect long security lines upon arrival. To help pass the time bring some games you can play with your festival squad, or make friends with other campers waiting in line!

3. Put Up Some Shade

Temperatures during the festival regularly exceed 90 degrees, you’re going to want to retreat back to your campsite for some shade at some point. It’s super important to bring items you can use to build your own canopy, like sheets or a tarp, that way you’ve always got a nice spot to come back to when you need to cool off a little.

4. Whatever You Do, Stake Your Camping Area

The desert wind can ruin everything! The area is infamous for its dust storms, so make sure you stake down your tent and canopy. Only bring plastic stakes to the campgrounds, metal ones are prohibited and will get confiscated. And don’t forget a rubber mallet! If you want to be extra cautious, take any of your tarps or tents down before heading into the festival just in case the wind picks up while you’re away.

5. Get Creative and Decorate Your Campsite

The campgrounds get super crowded which makes it easy to get lost and not find your way back to your campsite, particularly at night when you’re tired and it all starts to look the same. Bring string lights, inflatable toys and flags to decorate your area with, anything that will help you find your way back more easily.

6. Bring What You Need for Good Shut Eye

Sleep won’t be the first thing on your mind but trust me on this one, you’re going to want to recharge between days. After hours in the blazing heat and dancing to your favorite artists, you’ll be craving a comfortable space to crash in. Go for comfort, bring an air mattress or sleeping pad, sleeping bag, pillow, earplugs and an eye mask!

7. Pack a Cooler With All Your Faves

You’re allowed to bring your own food and drinks to the campgrounds so pack a big cooler with plenty of ice and your fave snacks/beverages to last you all weekend long. If you’re not into the idea of bringing your own supplies don’t worry, there’s a huge food court selling everything you could ever need, you’re sure to find something you love to eat!

8. Bring Your Own Source of Power

The festival will be filled with Insta-worthy moments so you’re going to be using your phone a lot and your battery is likely to run out quickly. An external battery will give you the flexibility to charge your phone whenever you want to, rather than needing to plan your day around finding a charging station and standing in line for it. Bring at least 2 power banks to last you the whole festival.

9. Don’t Forget to Bring Water and Lots of It

Bring a case of water to keep at your campsite so you always have water available. You’ll seriously be thanking yourself, particularly in the mornings when you wake up in the blazing heat and don’t feel like walking around in the sun to find a water station!

10. First Come First Served

Always try to shower before 8 AM. It may sound too early for you but honestly, once the sun is up you’ll be awake anyway so you may as well get up to beat those long shower lines. Start your day right: get up, go shower before everyone else, then come back to your campsite for a nap while everyone waits in line for a shower in the sun!

EXIT Festival

Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE)

Amsterdam Dance Event (known as ADE) is Europe’s top music conference and festival. It hosts over 2,500 artists at 1000 events in over 200 venues across the Dutch capital. For a whole week Amsterdam breathes electronic music, playing the whole scope of electronic subgenres in every crevice of the city. Find the Right Music Festival(s)

Think about what you want from your festival season before diving deep into it. Perhaps you just want to go to one event this year or maybe several. Whatever the case may be, take the time to research different music festivals to find the ones that match your music taste, budget, and overall expectations of what you’d like from your festival experiences. Find out as much as you can about every festival, start to build a plan to see if your festival season goals are feasible.

Early Bird Gets the…Cheapest Tickets

Basically, the sooner you buy your festival tickets the cheaper they are. Promoters release tickets in several phases and the closer it gets to the event the more expensive they’ll be. Usually once I’ve decided which music festivals I want to attend, I’ll look up when the first batch (early birds) of tickets go on sale. I always set a reminder in my calendar and make sure whoever is coming with me to the event knows about the release date as well to make sure we can score enough tickets!

Book Travel Sooner Rather Than Later

Music festivals attract thousands of attendees at one time, and they all expect to travel from all corners of the country to the venue on the days leading up to the event. My advice: be travel savvy! As soon as you’ve got those festival tickets your next step should be to plan how to travel to the event. The last thing you want is to have your tickets but have no way of getting there. And the same goes for accommodation (if you’re not camping of course!), the sooner you book the better to avoid getting stuck with something you don’t feel comfortable with.

Feel Like a Rave God(dess)

Music festivals are heaps of fun but let’s face they’re also physically taxing, even for the most seasoned of ravers! In the run up to festival season I like to kick my cardio and resistance training up a notch and I become more mindful of what I’m eating. I find that the right amount of exercise and the right foods will help me feel strong and give me the energy to dance for days and nights on end. Staying healthy in between events during festival season also helps me bounce back faster so I’m always ready to rave!

Invest in the Right Gear

Once you’ve familiarized yourself with all the events you’ll be attending during festival season, make a list of the gear you need to make sure your festival escapades go smoothly. Give yourself enough time to research your equipment, make sure you’re investing in reliable gear that will last throughout the season (for example: reliable tent, hydration pack etc.). And before purchasing, always check that the festival hasn’t listed any of your new kit on their list of prohibited items!

Plan Your Outfits

Once you’ve got the serious stuff out of the way, it’s time for the fun part of festival planning: styling! My rule of thumb is to plan my outfits at least 4 weeks ahead of time, this allows enough time for possible delivery delays or to make changes if necessary. If I’m attending multiple events over several weekends, I’ll bag each outfit (accessories included!) into individual pouches and label them with the name of the music festival. This makes packing for each event much easier, no last-minute panic packing!

Listen to the Lineup

In the runup to each festival I like to create playlists with artists that will be performing at the event. I usually mix things up a little, I’ll throw in artists I already know and new artists as I like to discover new music when I go to music festivals. This way by the time I get to the event I’ve got a full repertoire of songs I can sing along to at the top of my voice. And I’ll usually have playlists on as I’m getting ready which really gets me pumped before every event!

Don’t Forget Your Ticket(s)

You’d be surprised by how many people I’ve traveled with who’ve forgotten either their festival ticket or travel ticket. Secure your festival tickets in advance, early birds are always significantly cheaper than later releases. Once you’ve secured entry to the event, get your travel tickets, and again snatch those as quickly as you can, the prices will increase as the event approaches. 

Otherwise, check if the festival is offering any all-inclusive packages, this will make planning a whole lot easier as you won’t need to figure out any of the travel logistics, more time to spare to figure out the fun parts of the trip!

Get Travel Insurance

Buy comprehensive travel insurance. Take the advice from someone who hasn’t always had insurance and has watched some trips go sideways then wished they were covered. It’s never a bad thing to be over prepared, particularly when you’re going overseas and given how unpredictable travel can be these days, make sure you’re covered properly. It's usually less than $50 anyway, which is far better than paying hundreds or thousands of dollars later on if there is an emergency (pro tip: travel insurance often doubles as health insurance while abroad).

Check Your Passport & Visa Requirements

The minimum passport validity requirement can vary depending on which country you’re flying to or the airline you’re traveling with. From experience, this can fluctuate between 3 and 6 months. If your passport doesn’t meet the travel requirement you could be denied entry into your destination country. Check your passport’s validity ahead of time to be sure you don’t encounter any issues on your day of travel. 

Many countries also require passports to have at least one empty page in them in order to grant entry, but you likely know that already if you're someone worried about having a spare page in your passport. ;) You can check visa requirements and general travel warnings by country here.

Be Accommodation Savvy

Whenever I travel to a music festival abroad, I book accommodation near the venue, preferably walking distance so I don’t have to worry about getting back to my room once the event is over. Having accommodation nearby leaves some of the guesswork out of figuring out how to get transport to the venue, which can be daunting when you’re in a new place.

If you’re feeling particularly overwhelmed about traveling abroad, I suggest arriving a day before the music festival so you have time to get acclimatized, especially if you need some time to recover after a long travel day.

Do Your Research

This applies to anything from the weather, to the local currency, the food, and even the venue. Simple things like knowing whether the venue is indoor or outdoor will already give some indication of how to prepare for your festival adventure and be able to anticipate what you need. Get to know where you’re going so you feel comfortable and confident about your trip.

Try On Your Outfits 

Unless you have crazy amounts of luggage allowance, my advice is to pack light but wisely. The heavier the bag the more it’s going to cost you. The weather, the venue and the programme will largely impact your outfit decisions, so going back to my point above: do your research! Once you’ve done your research and you’ve familiarized yourself with the music festival, plan and try on your outfits, then only pack what’s necessary. 

Respect the Do’s and Don'ts

It’s so important to check what items aren’t allowed into the festival grounds and what rules the event enforces before turning up to the event. These really differ from one music festival to another, so to avoid drawing attention to yourself for all the wrong reasons make sure you read through their guidelines properly and respect them.

Speaking of the do's and don'ts, read up on the local culture of the place you're traveling to before you get there. It's a great way to understand the local mentality and avoid any mishaps during your trip. Be mindful of COVID-19 precautions that are local to your travel destination, and do your part by getting the vaccine before you go.

Give Yourself Enough Time to Pack

Don’t rush your packing on the day you’re leaving for the music festival. Give yourself plenty of time so you don’t miss anything and also don’t put too much pressure on yourself before traveling. You can always do one final check right before you depart.

Learn the Local Language

Study a few sentences on Google Translate before you land, just to help you along on your trip. Phrases as simple as asking where the toilet is or asking how much something costs will not only prevent you from wasting time figuring things on your own but will help you immerse yourself in the local culture more. It may earn you the respect of locals, and you may end up making a friend or two along the way!

Be Prepared for Emergencies

Make a note of the contact details for your nearest embassy or consulate, and get acquainted with what they do to help in case of emergencies. Also memorize the code for the emergency services for the country you’re visiting. Again, it never hurts to be too prepared!

“Prep Yourself the Week Before and After”

Getting yourself ready is key to having all the energy you need to dance and being in the right mindset to enjoy yourself. A week before the rave, try to get a good night’s rest every night, hydrate properly every day, eat well and don’t overexert yourself. You can also try to go for long walks in the days leading up to the festival, that way all of the walking once you're at the festival is less tiresome.

Take extra care of yourself when returning to your normal routine. You’ll have survived a weekend of little to no sleep, consider taking a day off work if you can to give your mind and body proper recovery time.

“You Can Go Sober”

And no one will care! People sometimes have this misconception that because you’re going to a rave that you have to do drugs or get drunk. But raves are fun without substances, and you’ll quickly find out that there are plenty of other sober people around so there’s zero judgement! Always make good decisions and only do what’s right for you.

“Wear Comfy Shoes”

You’re going to a music festival, expect a lot of walking, dancing and people stepping on your feet! When it comes to shoes, always prioritize comfort over style! Tight shoes lead to blisters and bruised toe nails (that eventually fall off!). Learn from our mistakes and only wear reliable shoes!

“Don’t Miss Out On Your Favorite Artists”

The set times are always announced ahead of the event, save them to your phone and then set them as your lock screen. This way you can keep track of where your favorite artists are playing and you won’t miss any of the sets you want to dance to!

Pro veteran tip: don’t be afraid to venture out of your comfort zone and listen to some new artists, you never know what experiences you might encounter!

“Wear Earplugs”

Wearing earplugs to music festivals is what all the cool ravers are doing these days! It doesn’t matter whether you like riding the rail or hanging in the back of the crowd, exposure to loud music for long periods of time can put you at risk for hearing loss. Don’t risk permanent damage to your hearing, keep your ears safe and enjoy music comfortably!

“Use The Restroom”

There are two essential restroom breaks that you need to stick to for a smooth rave experience. The first is when you arrive at the event. The last thing you want is to walk into the main stage crowd and then suddenly get the urge! Save yourself the hassle, go as soon as you get there. The second is when you leave the event. Even if you don’t feel like you need to go, go. Once you hit the road, there’s no guarantee you’ll find another restroom.

“Don’t Hold Back on Dressing Up”

One of the best things about music festivals, other than the music of course, is being able to dress up and wear things you don’t normally wear: glitter, face gems, trippy prints, neon, fluffies...and the list goes on! There are no rules or restrictions, you can experiment and go as wild as you want with your outfits.

“Don’t Pack Heavy & Check the Restrictions”

Travel light and only bring essentials! Plan your outfits and cross-check your packing list with the music festival’s restricted items so you don’t get anything confiscated at the gates. If you’re going to a one-day event, don’t pack anything bigger than a fanny pack or small backpack. For a multi-day event, avoid any large pieces of luggage, you may have to walk a distance to the campsite so make sure it’s easy to carry!

“Just Let Go & Don’t Overthink”

Last but definitely not least: just have fun, let go and don’t overthink! Music festivals are a safe space for you to forget the world outside and go crazy. Let yourself be swept up in the moment and be open to new experiences, the best memories often come from the most unexpected things.

Don’t Raid Your Craft Drawer for Glitter

One of the worst mistakes you can make when creating your glitter looks is to use craft glitter. It’s not manufactured to stick on your skin, it’s much harder, and it has sharper edges so it’ll dry it out. Or worse you might cut the surface of your skin and get a rash, especially if you use it on your face or around your eye area where your skin is particularly fragile. Be sure to get some quality cosmetic-grade glitter that you can wear safely and that will treat your skin with kindness!

Choose Your Look Before You Start

I totally get it, when you get your hands on a pot of glitter the first thing you want to do is go to town on the sparkly stuff and put it all over yourself. Trust me, I've been there and done that but it’s not a good look. I look back on festival photos and often wonder what I was thinking! My advice, choose your glitter look before you start, it can be the difference between being a sparkly rave goddess and a hot glittery mess.

Glue With a Glitter Adhesive

The best way to make sure your look stays in place at a rave is to use a glitter adhesive. Apply it on the area you’d like to put glitter on, then lightly sprinkle sparkles over it. Tidy it up a bit if necessary and then allow it to dry. It’s as easy as that!

Use a Makeup Brush

You could totally apply glitter with your fingertips, but I’ve always found that dabbing it on with a makeup brush helps to make sure you get it in all the right places. Using your fingers can quickly turn into a glitter nightmare because it’ll often get stuck to your fingers rather than your face. I usually pack a few different makeup brushes when I travel to music festivals so I can get creative with my glitter looks.

Create Glitter Stamps Out of Makeup Sponges

This hack is particularly good for the last day of a music festival. At this point you’re probably sleep-deprived and the last thing you want to do is sit there with different makeup brushes trying to figure out how to apply glitter to your face. Instead, use custom glitter stamps made out of cheap or old makeup sponges! You can cut out all sorts of shapes, then dip that sponge in glitter and dab on your face for a super quick glitter look.

Remember to cut your glitter stamps at home and bring them to the festival, don’t try to bring scissors to the event!

Have Q-Tips on Standby

Glitter mishaps happen to the best of us! It can get really messy and it can sometimes get in the wrong places, so make sure to always have a few cotton swabs at the ready to tidy up your glitter looks before heading to the rave!

Highlight Your Cheekbones
